I use to feed the Diamond Naturals lamb and rice. When I heard about all this I decided to stop feeding this one. I am not feeding the Kirkland chicken. ( I know it is made by Diamond). My dogs are doing great on this. The one thing that I noticed about the Diamond Naturals is that my dogs got small abcesses on them . These are now all gone since they have been off of the food.

4pack

Sorry to hear about your pet rats.

4pack-I was sick when I say your photos of Rats. I took the Liberty of sending this Post to Diamond Foods. Here is the email:

Thank you so much for letting us know about this discussion.
If the owner 4pack had contacted us when she first noticed a problem
with her dog refusing to eat, we could have helped her figure out if
there was a problem with that particular bag of food (and would still be
willing to help, if she still has the bag and the food).
In her previous post from a month ago, when she first started feeding
from that particular bag of food and noted her dog's reluctance to eat,
she admits that her rats (especially the older ones) already had several
of the health problems pictured, including blindness, skin and coat
issues.

I am not sure of the long term effects of feeding an inappropriate food
(dog food) to a rat, but do know that the two animal species have very
different and specific requirements for certain amino acids, fatty
acids, as well as vitamin/mineral needs.

Rats are also prone to kidney abnormalities (glomerlonephropathies and
renal mineralization), at an early age, which can be exacerbated by
feeding a diet containing an excess of certain minerals. Underlying
renal disease can cause multiple other health problems in other organ
systems.

The pictures show a variety of health conditions, some of which are
commonly observed in pet rats, secondary to infectious disease (such as
SDAV), as well as old age.
