Thanks Arrakis.
Makes a person wonder if it was a mill specific problem then. Hopefully they will have it all straightened out soon but it is bothersome all the food issues that come up.

I'm in Massachusetts. Both bags I've bought have the same production code. If when I go to buy another bag the ones in stock have the same production code I think I'll buy the wetlands formula instead. Same protein content, but no canola oil in the ingredients.

The bags I have are plastic - quite "waterproof" - are the leaking bags the same? How could they possibly leak? I have to use a knife to open mine - they are very tough and tight.

Yup, that's what mine are too. It appears to be leaking out of the corner of the bottom where the seam is. I haven't had an oil puddle since but I suspect when I get to the bottom of the bag there will be a oil slick.

Yup, the seam on the bottom of the bag. The store had their bags standing up causing all the oil to run to the bottom. I'm still waiting on the compay's reply after giving them the store name and phone numbers.

Ok here is the reply that I got from the Diamond Quality Assurance Manager.
I talked to Rob, the store manager, and he checked the bags and found the oil that you were talking about. He pulled the bags and will be getting them replaced. He gave me the production codes from the bags and they had Best Before dates of Aug and Sept of 2008 so they were almost a year old.
These bags were actually from the first two production runs of the product. We found that the canola oil that we apply to the outside of the kibble did not absorb into the food like we thought it would. On the runs produced after this, we began injecting the oil into the kibble as the food is being made and applied less to the outside. This has fixed the problem.
I apologize for the concern and aggravation that this has caused you. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
Cordell

Good to know it. I checked another bag opened yesterday and the kibble was dry, not oily at all let alone oil in the bag - no moisture at all stuck to the inside of the bag. Glad the problem was noticed, notified and fixed.
