Solid black is the most recessive color in a GSD. Both parents must carry the recessive gene for solid black. That is the black factor, carrying the recessive for solid black.
My pup Pharaoh is solid black. Both of his parents are sable. There were eight puppies, 6 were sable and 2 were solid black. The six sable pups had a wide range of color. Some of them were very black in the face like the parents and others were more even colored and a bit lighter.
Sables who carry the recessive for solid black tend to be darker and blacker or black factored.
father - Aron v Poppitz
mother - Sindy v Ludwigseck
The two solid black puppies, Pharaoh and his brother Nash, tended to hang out togeter, I dubbed them the Soul Brothers.
I wonder if Pharaoh dreams of his brother Nash sometimes.

Pharaoh,
That diagram is very interesting ??? I never looked at it before here on this site. the angles are not the same as the old standard used to be. For, example the measurement for the croup , in my book are 30 degrees.
I think I'll stick with the original standard.
When I get home , I'll look up some of the other angles as well, and share with all , if you are interested.

The way I was told was the black factor is when an all black may have a little bit of deep red or gold tones on the back of their legs and the rest of them is all black? I guess I was told wrong then? I had a male pup that was all black until he turned 3 years old, then he started to get very little deep red in the back of his hind legs.
Jamille,
That would be interesting to see.

Is this considered Black Factor?

by Jamille on 18 July 2008 - 23:07
Sorry I have been away from the computer for a couple of days.
Croup 30 degrees
pastern 25 degrees
lay of shoulder 45
forequarter 90 degrees
hindquarters 90 degrees to match forequarter, this is the hind limb that is placed foreward with the toes ,below the stifle. scapula and pelvis should match in length and angle, as should the connected joints, that form the 90 degree angle.

I realy need to get out of hawaii so I can find a mentor to teac me about structure and conformation. My club director is awesome but because everyone in the club is so new and because we are all military he has no time to get into that stuff because we only get together once a week. Maybe ill be able to understand half of that stuff you just posted Jamille. Maybe one day....
