There is the AKC and they have shows which include GSDs as well as other breeds and you will often see some very nice looking American GSDs.Then, there are the "Specialty Shows" where you will see the engineered for side gait and nothing else American showlines.
Here is the Sonomarin GSD club (all very nice people)

Here are the 2008 Specialty Shows

not all are the narrow head, slab sided dick tracy dogs. I am seeing quite a few german dogs being shown that are starting to get just as much angulation as the americans and also slabb sided. I can name a VA male who was extreme and it has been carried on down his lines and all those dogs are top winners in germany

Incorrect is incorrect regadless of what lines you're using. At least some of the over angulated west german dogs have titles! Sorry if my earlier comment seemed crass, I go to AKC events regualarly to compete in obedience and the American showline dogs I see there never cease to amaze me, and not in a good way.

I am a working line person, and always will be. That said, in my opinion ASSes have waaaaaaaaay too high a mountain to climb to even begin to be considered equal to German Show Line dogs. I find the mere suggestion laughable. ASSes don't work, pretty much can't work, but they sure can do that silly, exagerated and useless flying trot around and around a little ring - in one direction.

Yep, American showline female, Tigermouse. Everybody else, the dog can't help being what she is. Blame the American showline breeders, and not all of them, just the ones who breed the kind of dog that can only move in the AKC showring. I never bothered with AKC shows or titles until recently and I was truly shocked at the condition of some of those poor dogs in the showring. Way too thin, no muscles at all, wobbly legs, bitchy dogs, some snipey faces... and that Am. showline stack with the far rear hock flat on the ground!?! My little German boy is stronger than any half dozen of them, is a rich black and red, and moves better too. And he's immature for his age of just 9 months!
All that said, there are some American AKc breeders who are doing it right by sticking closer to the standard (where does the standard mention a ski-slope topline?! or running with hocks flat on the gound?! or a hinged looking back for that matter?!). I really feel for the poor dogs whose breeders prefer them deformed and wish there were some way to run those people out of the dog game, but there isn't. The American showline is a fad that started with Covy Tucker Hill back in the late '70s and 80s and it will have to run its course before things change.

Thanks, Uber Land, some of those dogs you showed (not all the links worked for me) are really nice and yes, they are LOTS nicer than the broken-backed, croup-less things I've seen on here. Some of the "awesome" "fantastic" dogs advertised on here are overloaded in the front and their hind ends look like they belong to a much tinier dog. I hate the ski-slope American show toplines, but I equally hate banana backs and those 2-part spines that look like they were snapped in the middle.
BOTH sides have quality dogs, and BOTH sides have a lot of crap.
