I fail to see how breeding specifically for work is equitable to breeding for a pet who just looks 'cute'.

Cate,

It is really simple.  The board is designed for dicussions on gsd, however there is no problem with talking about a breeding to make a better working dog. A shepherdoodle is NOT bettering the breed. Half mal/sheph is not bettering the breed either, maybe just making a stronger dog. Who knows.

Let's face it, most people who breed to make mutts is in it for one thing and one thing only....MONEY. I am not saying that the people who bred the mal/sheph is that type of person. I do not know them, but let's be real. A shepherdoodle???? Making a better working dog to complete for one's self respect is also different than breeding mixes to sell to the police department.

LOL some of you friggin' people are ignorant, and it hurts watching what you type. I'm pretty damn sure this litter was bred for dogs that work hard, not about making a buck. Most service dogs don't even get bred and it sounded as if this litter was for police and strong working homes. Homes that have work, not breeding further mutts, on their minds. Blending of breeds like this happens all of the time in Holland and Belgium, where do most police import their dogs from...Holland and Belgium. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out but if you must have papers, you can go ahead and import dogs from these countries, that will tell you they are whatever breed they most look like, if that makes you feel any better. Those of you that look down your noses, deserve a good fist right in it.

Face it, there are people out there with more important things on their minds, than researching pure bred dogs, so they can pay more for puppies that might work, half as hard as a mutt of the above breeding. It's not everyones duty or first priority to perserve the GSD. Get over yourselves.

I would love to see Dr. Helmut Raiser  take this kind of dog and run with it all the way to a world championship. That is the only way people will realize that sometimes this kind of breeding can serve its purpose. That purpose is not to sell, but WORK! I love GSD and I will never buy or breed anything but, however I will never claim that a better dog can exsist nor be created from the GSD. I see nothing wrong with this unless its for the wrong reason. The sad part is I bet someone out there felt the same way when they "created" the labradoodle. That was just corupted by puppy mils.

There are plenty of German Shepherds out there that will do the work needed without the "better, faster,Stronger mentality. I just advocate spending the time working the German Dhepherd dog as a German Shepherd dog. To each his own but don,t try to tell me that you MUST build a designer dog to get a working dog. I,m speaking only to what i,ve read so take it for what it,s worth but I was under the impression tha Reiser was speaking of the German Show dog lines needing returned to what there origns were a working breed?. You can do waht you want say what you want it,s America. If i,m not mistaken did,nt there used to be a fasination years ago with breedind Rotts and Dobies? wasnt that supposed to be the ultimate working dog?  I,ve even read of dobies and German Shepherds cross those were the ultimate working dogs. So do what you want... Oh by the way 4pack... Any time you feel froggy just jump.

Uh no, this is not "America".  This is an international board with members from all around the globe.  You just don't get it.  This has nothing to do with Herr Reiser.  Blending these breeds is an accepted practice in many circles and has been going on as long as there have been GSDs, Dutchies and Malinois.

I'm pretty sure they didnt breed this litter with intention to breed it back into the population.  They bred it to work.

Some breeders can spend that time - but there are some who dont care as much about pedigree as they do about the dog they produce for the work they do - breeders who dont focus on selling a pup to the first buyer - breeders who place all their pups with working foster homes, working homes or in the jails to be raised  - Should they be spending 10 years trying to breed the 'right' dog or spending 2 breeding the mix dog and save a cops life now.  It's to each his own I suppose - but its not like these mutts are advertised as awsome German Shepherds - everyone knows they're mixes and knows what they are for.

I think there should be a place for this, but I don't think it belongs here.  It should be a separate platform, such as "GSD MIX" under the "Switch Breed" button.  Once inside, any gsd pedigree should be selectable for the pedigree of the mixed offspring.

This discussion should not be on whether this particular breeding is good or not!

This is a GSD data base! Period!

If people want to list mix's, no matter how wonderful they are... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..........................

Oli should make them their own mix data base. Simple as that. Go ahead and list the particular mix and name it appropriately. Or have catagories in a general "Mix" data base. Seems to me Oli has worked hard to keep this data base pure and breed specific, why mess it up now????????????? Put your head on straight people!! It's not about how wonderful the mix is..... it is about GSD's!
