I forgot I had a MySpace account:. I have Mike's pics saved but want his permission to post them first.

IMI_GSD I sent you 4 pics. I appreciate it. For everyone else, I could not find a pic with his legs crossed but I will get one. Just need to find my camera.

MI_GSD pls do!

Definitely cow-hocked. What are his lines?

by mikecast1 on 19 January 2008 - 14:01
Is that bad? I mean it looks bad to me. He is on the database as Thor Castellanos Vom Kirseys. And I trusted Bill.

by Sunsilver on 19 January 2008 - 14:01
Yes, it's a serious fault. His hocks are weak. It may be the way she's stacked, but his mom looks rather weak in the hocks, too.
Were either of the parents titled or OFA'd? I don't see that info on the database.
by FerrumGSDs on 19 January 2008 - 18:01
Sunsilver, do you think weak is the right word? he is cow hocked but that only means the hockes point inwards.
The father has A stamp and the parents of the dam as well.
Mike,
it is a fault and your dog also stands east west and has pinched elbows, however, this does not mean the dog is unhealthy, he could very well be able to work and be fast and agile dog despite not having great comformation, and he could even certify for OFA, ( You will need to X-ray for that.)
These are faults but not disqualifying faults, and not something covered in Guarantees either, and unfortunately they run in many GSD lines from working to show from many lines. I've seen V rated dogs with hockss like this.
But it is not angulation. While angulation makes these faults more visable, cow hocks are cow hocks period. All it means is that the hocks point inward.

It's analogous to a person being pigeon-toed, it has nothing to do with your dog being a good dog, doesn't make them any less lovable, and they are no more likely than any other dog to have health problems. They would be less than desirable to use for breeding stock, but any other use than that is just fine, no problem. My girl is a little cow-hocked, too. It's more pronounced when they're young, in that 'leggy' stage, and as they age it's less noticable, in most instances. As I grew more knowledgable about the breed I, too, became more aware of my first dogs faults; but I also began to see her strengths. Her flaws make her all the more lovable to me. And I see how strong she is despite them. The GSD is the most wonderful breed of dog, their loyalty, intelligence, & courage are so much more noticable than minor flaws of conformation. Have fun with your dog! Don't sweat the little flaws, just learn, learn, learn. Best Wishes, jackie harris
