I wouldn't want to have to give an 8 week old pup a rabies vaccine.

Any resolutions on health care yet?....right.

Here is a link to the Good Morning America story on the import ban. There is a place to leave comments on the page. Unfortunately, most of the comments I read are running against importation (the A/R people are overrunning the site, so it seems). Perhaps a note to the German embassy in Washington could enlist their help? Micky

According to the AKC website the ban is only for puppies imported for resale. If you're importing a pup for yourself the new law doesn't apply.

It's not a BAN! http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ is the government site which has all sorts of data pertaining import/export rules on animals, pets. Shirley's Wellness Cafe is a GREAT reference site - here the link on vaccinations. http://freefind.com/servlet/freefind?id=9609505&pageid=r&mode=ALL&query=vaccinations It's a first for me to hear that breeders here are importing all kinds of breeds from abroad's puppy mills, but when you think of it, why not, when there is money involved. But on the GMA piece, which I watched, it was a good warning for those who buy from a 'breeder' here who doesn't tell where the pup really came from. What was dumb about it is that they only referred to ONLINE sales... I mean, a local breeder couldn't have imported a litter and lie to you? That was just too out there. What AKC can do for us as good breeders and their buyers, is to implement mandatory DNA registrations of ALL BREEDING STOCK. Bring the price down from the $35 to $15 because of the volume and tadaaahhhh, here your buyer has inexpensive proof of the validity of these pups parentage. I can guarantee you that most of those pup mills have no idea who is who, and thereby as a result, that importing issue is done with as those pups with useless papers are not going to be bought by these 'brokers' who call themselves breeders as they are unregistrable due to their dubious parentage. Now to get AKC do to anything, that'll be the day. I've never seen an organization with that much power be so complacent about enforcing ANYTHING! I just sent them another letter raking them over the coals about something stupid. Just imagine with all their money they are still a non for profit? I would love to know where its going... They should really take some lessons from the SV. This GMA piece will hopefully let those folks who don't ask questions, ASK them now before they fall in love with the picture of a pup, as all pups are cute and there are more dumb people out there than one can count. No offense, but that is just the way it is. We're fighting a true uphill battle and the sickly badly bred dogs and their owners get to pay for that. So, since I'm against vaccinating early, and I've never imported a whole litter, it won't likely affect me.

i think people are jumping to conclusions here. as i said before, i just received one on 12/4/07 and she was required to have a rabies vac. no big deal. the transaction was carried out by gkair, the largest pet transporter in the world. i had no difficulty what so ever. puppy left frankfurt at a little after 10 am their time and arrived in detroit after 1pm our time. i had contacted customs the day before at mnpls/st paul to let them know she was coming and that i would like to get her cleared in advance because her flight from detroit to mnpls would not arrive until after 6pm and the customs folks would be gone for the day already. no problem. they contacted detriot and had the customs clearing done there, so when she flew into mnpls i was able to get her immediately. i have found nwairlines to be very helpful and very conscientious about caring for the pups. i have had pups delayed in detroit due to the heat and have to take a later flight when it cools off and the pup arrived in fine condition....clean papers and all. i have never had a pup arrive in a soiled crate. even the customs people have been better to get along with than you might expect. surely they understand my concerns in shipping 8-9 wk pups. they don't want to be responsible for them any longer than necessary. they did ask me if the pup was for resale and i assured them that she was for me only. they also wanted to make sure all shots, including rabies, were in order and that the vet inspection sheet accompanied the dog. no problem. gkair takes care of all that. now, as far as import dogs becoming a problem in this country as rescue dogs.......i just don't see it. it cost me 551.19 euro or 829.75 us dollars to ship this pup. the us dollar is not standing up well to the euro which makes shipping not very cost effictive, not to mention the price of the dog in conversion. my pup was in a small crate 27x20x21. i can't even imagine the cost of shipping a full grown dog! bottom line is - i just can't see people importing a slug of dogs at those prices and counting on getting them sold. even if they could get a good deal and ship each one for 500usd, they'd still have a lot of money tied up and no guarantee of a return on their investment. it is very costly to ship dogs. i can't see import dogs being placed in shelters for adoption.....that is just bizarre. i'm not sure how this whole story got started, but i am resonably sure it has been blown out of proportion. it probably amounts to a few isolated cases and not toward a general trend. pjp

4pack

And just how in the Sam hell are they going to know if you sell a pup or not at a later date? New jobs and millions of tax dollars for people to come check in on imported puppies and make sure they are still with their import/owners months-years down the road? Brokers can always lie and say it is for them, oh a couple weeks later the pup doesn't work out and is sold. Still wasting precious govt time and money that could be used elsewhere for a bill that could make a difference in America. This is so stupid it hurts my brain! Ban the import of rescues and put a hefty fine on offending "rescue" facilities. They must be charging a pretty adoption fee to cover the cost of importing these dogs from all over the world. And America wake the hell up! Why are you paying $600+ for adoption fees on a animal you know nothing about, could have congenital defects and issues up the ying yang, no guarantee accept that they will take it back later if you don't want it, minus your refund so they can re-adopt it out for another hefty fee? Holy Shit! I just realized I'm in the wrong business!

Ziegenfarm and 4pack are both right on. It's blown out of proportion and stupid for those reasons you both pointed out. Probably, as usual, an isolated incident which some reporter came upon and before Xmas wanted to 'score points with his network?' Another thing that really is absurd is the fees the custom brokers charge, not to be forgotten. If you ship / import into or out of the USA. The least expensive quote i received recently for shipping an adult dog TO germany was $1200 + $350 for the custom broker fee - oh that was ONE WAY from NM. Going to the East or West coast directly is cheaper by 1/3rd thereabouts, but still costly for some broker to do this on a consistent basis. You are only allowed two pups per crate, for starters. Health Certs are required on the way in or out, about $50 per pup. Then the crate $75 average for two pups. The pick up fees? How are brokers getting around those expenses? they're not. Anyway, my recommendation to any buyer is to exercise patience in finding a reputable breeder through a lot of home work instead of jumping on the first 'right' offer on the net or anywhere. learn what questions to ask, by researching what you want, then look...
