Thank you Bucko that was very informative. What about aggresion issues? I agree with what you said about breeders testing thier pups. I am not ready just right now for a new dog but I am trying to learn more about different lines and get a better understanding of breeders. There are just so many different choices on the gsd. My male who passed away was so smart and keen but very over protective. This was my first experience with a working line. We did alot of basic obedience training and socialization with him. I still had to be very careful around others, he would bite any one he didnt know who approached me. The breeder told me maybe we had bonded a little to much. ?? I live in a rural area and miss the protection I felt with him. His grandparent were Ratz Von Haus Antverpa and Kim v Tiekerhook on the paternal and Troy Von Haus Antverpa And Leike Von Den Treiser Hhlen maternal. He was a great dog to me but alitle screwy sometimes. Being an amateur here Im a little unsure when I look at breedings at what do look for in a dogs pedigree. I am a nurse and would like to get into sar work and also want a dog who will fend off unwanted wildlife[ 6 acres do alot of veg gardening] be a good protector and ok when my grandchild visits. I know i need to do more training next time too

lewly, i think its taste. what dog do you like more ? what dog do you breed? It's sad but true. people will defend working dogs, if they like working dogs. people will defend show dogs the same way. My favorite shepherd was a working line shepherd I got from a breeder that was going to send it to the pound. I prefer show line gsd and long coats. I guess in here that makes me a horrible person. Dont let peoples opinions bother you, Love your dog...that is numero uno.

Like a very talented trainer I know usually says when someone is going thru a training issue with their dog:
It's not the dog, It's the trainer!

Now if you were talking Labrador Retrievers,
Yellows are very loving & mellow good therapy!
Chocolates are not the sharpest tools in the shed!
Blacks are right out there for smarts, OK where's the bird!!!!
Do you think a German Shepherds color and not necessarily the origin<
could play an important factor in it's intelligence??????

Oh, sorry LEWLY,
I say, with personal experience, EAST GERMAN DDR LINES ARE THE MOST INTELLIGENT!!!!!
Sorry to get carried away...........
Don't you just dred that you'll go & spell something wrong while answering a ? on intelligence!!!

I havent read that book, but its on my list.
Good post Bucko, observation is key along with testing, and time.
Many good points to consider.
