Cool.  I've got no axe to grind, nor do I get paid to promote PennHIP.  However, I'm concerned when you use terms like "levered out of their sockets" that you might think that the PennHIP vets dislocate the joint or do some other such horrific crap.  Yes, they spread the legs and pull 'em tight, but there's no extreme BS going on behind closed doors either.  If you would have seen the petite and dare I say dainty lady vet who PennHIP'ed my hubby's Mali I think you'd also laugh at the notion that this woman could pull a Pug's joint of whack.  Hee hee.

But hey... if you want to stick with OFA that's fine too.  (However, in that case I would think about getting the male re-positioned for a new film to send in.

i feel the positioning of seven months female x-ray is very good as compared to the other one.  the first one though seems to be have been suffering from mild discomfort (i wont say it dysplasia) and if fed on glycosamine chondro 2000 mg along with 500 mg of vitamin c, every day, the chances are she may act absolutely normally without showing any sign of discomfort/pain.

the x-ray of two yr. old male needs to be redone.  the position is awfully wrong.  the corners of pelvic though have been overlapped from both sides, the left one is much higher and dog seems to be tilted left sided (our left side) and hence dog's left acetabulm appears to be shallow.  if the position is correct, i.e. both wings equally straight, then perhaps the story will altogether could be different.

Smartboy, I agree and thank you.  I will be re-doing the 2-year old's x-rays before sending them in to OFA.  I spoke to my vet and posted his response above.  He thinks the positioning is "fine" - but agrees that it may  make the difference between two ratings.

I will wait for 6 months before re-x-raying the puppy, I agree her positioning was ok, but sometimes pups that age have normal laxity and a later x-ray will show me if it is something to worry about or not.

New x-rays taken of the 2 year old male - what do you think?

positioning is still slightly off, but much nicer than the 1st set.

While looking at the 7 month old, I felt the pain in her left hip, OUCH<

The boy looks great!!!

Good luck & maybe things can change for your girl, and be on the upside, cause
after all, she's only 7 months old

by eichenluft on 30 November 2007 - 00:11

The 7 month old is 100% sound and has no pain, is completely sound in her movement as well.  I am hoping the laxity is normal for her age and/or caused by a close heat cycle.  Anyway I will give her the benefit of the doubt and re-x-ray to be sure in a few months - as of right now, I have a sound, healthy, happy puppy with no unsoundness at all, who is working great.

I noticed also that it may just be her positioning,
her knees aren't linning up,
for exercise you should try swimming her, I try to get my dogs to
the beach for a swim, but believe me, I'm full of S - - -! I really don't
practice what I preach, so don't rely on my expert opinion, cause like
everyone says "Opinions are like A - - holes everyone has one,
I really don't want to bum you out,

right now I'm waiting for pups to be born, I'm very nervous, I don't advertise until
they are born, cause I don't like to count my chickens before they hatch!

Call me wierd, but I take NOTHING for granted, and to have a healthy litter of pups,
is a blessing, I also take my sweet time placing them in their appropriate and
compatable new homes!!!

Anyway, thanks for the post, it was very interesting!!!

Geez, I hate to say this, but the xray is still not perfect and IMO the positioning is no better than it was on the first. I'm still betting on a good to an excellent regardless of which xray you send off.

One of my females was x-rayed at approx. 7 months, and had hips that I think looked very much like your girl.  I re-xrayed this past spring (at  about 3.5 years old), and it was not pretty.  The vet said moderate HD.  I did not send them into OFA though because she was not sedated at all and the vet didn't think the positioning was good enough.  I have images of both I can post if you'd like to see the changes.

I had mine on joint supplements as soon as I had the first x-ray done, and although she still has HD she does not appear to be in any pain, although I decided not to pursue schutzhund with her past her BH beacuse I didn't want to put her hips though that.

Hopefully your girl's laxity will clear up, good luck with her.
