Just some historical perspective. Prior to 1968 the standard had weight limits as well has height limits. For bitches it was 45 - 65 pounds and males 65- 85 pounds. You would occassionally get foxy little bitches( who usually are very pretty and often good movers and can be great herding dogs) that barely weighed 40 pounds and that is still in our genome and pops out every once and awhile. The GSD is in fact a medium size dog NOT a large or giant breed. The rush to oversize started in the states when we took the weight limits out of the standard. Nowdays it is more common for bitches to be 65 to 80 and unfortunately higher and males 75 on up and up and up.
Keep in mind however - you lose agility and flexibility as you add pounds and density to a frame designed for a much smaller dog. Look at most of your working police dogs - they are down in the 75-85 pound range for the most part because that is what works and keeps working for many years.
Finally just a question to think on. Perhaps the persistence of orthopedic problems come from putting too much weight on a frame not designed for it. Human docs tell overweight patients every day that they are risking joint complications due to the weight.

My male who at 5 months was 48 lbs but at 12 weeks he was 19.2 lbs. Now at 5 1.2 months he is 23 inches at the withers and still about 50 lbs. So you really can't tell yet.

Thanks Tyler.. I am glad you are Happy....Hope all are well and doing good in training. Send me an update via personal email about their training and how they are doing. :)
Thanks Bob, for the post about the lines as you do have a littermate to Ingrid (The Dam) and know the lines. You also know about Gharib and what he produces in his pups, the whole litter is full of drive and healthy.
I am sure you can also confirm to Yellow Rose of Texas.... that your female and Ingrid are Tall / nice bone structure and are from great lines in Germany. She has a Kkl1 and ED/AD A1. She is also 74 pounds and does NOT look like the picture taken from her previous owner in Germany. (The one posted in this Database) All of her info is also posted from her previous owner in Germany.
Her ears are longer than they look like in the picture to me that pic looks like they are down a little, and her ribs do not show at all here at my home, and the way he has her stacked her tail is not showing. It is a lousy pic. The pic of Gharib is also not a good one. I will take a better pic of her and post it for her Database pic. :)
Thanks to everyone who posted weights and helpful answers to someone looking for some helpful information.
MI GSD....
As for AKC, hate them....but that was a type-o they (GSD PUPS) are AKC, my bloodhounds are UKC and or CKC and most are AKC. I do not like all the hoops that the AKC make you jump through for Imported shepherds. I hate to give them all of my money but, a lot of people feel they are the only registry her in the US that is worth a flip. I wish we had something better than AKC.
My Imports are usually dual registered ie.... FCI and AKC or my hounds are UKC and CKC. I have a couple of AKC hounds but I am not going to register any more of my hounds AKC by choice. I hope breeders/ importers will have more and better choices in the future. I wish people didn't care so much about an import being dual registerd, as they are already registered from their original country when they are imported.
Again, Thanks again to everyone who was helpful.
