JMHO, but I think you're all missing the point. The dog is bored and in desparate need of training time.

Agree with Luvmidog: either the son goes to dog training school, or the dog goes....period.

Dogs can learn to be good house guests, too.

Oh Ranchinglady I forgot to add...he just got back from his 5 weeks at the trainers for "reform school"  lol  Plus we go to formal training twice a week and to the trainers farm at least once a day, usually twice.  He is just a super hyper pup.

My thoughts exactly Ranchinglady, at 15 months this sure isnt  a puppy teething issue anymore. That dog needs some training and stimulation. Remind me sometime to share with you all the things my fiancee's Iriac grandson did while he was away at Army boot/A-school.  I started having my daughter bring him to obedience class with me 2-3 nights a week and the behaviors completely disappeared almost immediately.

A crate is necessary here for sure, but that's not going to fix it, just prevent it...for now.

Crating is great but sounds like maybe he's bored and  needs alot more exersize too. Try walking him in the morning and then again in the evening. Worked great for my 15 mo old rescue who would run around the house constantly getting into things. He has tons of energy and  gets into trouble when he hasn't been walked enough. When he gets his 2 walks a day he's too pooped to get into trouble and seems more content.  He also sleeps in the bedroom with us at night like a perfect gentlemen out of the crate with the bedroom door shut.  He is happier when he is able to sleep in the same room with his "pack".

More exercise is key too.  I agree on that one.  For any dog.  For my guys it's hard core exercise too in training and in play.  So, they are very very very happy house dogs!

Ah hell my 6 month old pup never gets tired.  We train twice a day about 20 minutes at a time so he doesn't lose interest.  We go for a walk to the bus stop in the morning and afternoon and all day he runs and plays with his daddy.  He can't possibly get bored. lol  I think he just likes to work my last good nerve.

Agar is 4 yrs old and I still crate him when I'm gone for a longer period of time than normal.  I don't think he'd do anything but I don't wanna take the chance to find out either.  At night he runs the house and sleeps next to the bed but the demon pup gets crated.  The only time he gets to run the house is if I am right there to see what he might get into.  And I don't feel bad about it either.  I have friends that say "what kinda life is it for a dog to be in a crate, how would you like it if we stuck you in a cage?"  So I politely respond with "how would you like to come home and have no legs left off your dining room chairs?" lol  I had an Akita chew a hole in my basement door that he could fit his whole head through and that was because I use to keep him in the garage when I wasn't home.  Guess he showed me what he thought about that huh?  He's no longer with us.

Rachinlady- That was a good one.  Hey I never thought of that.  Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try that .lol

Which leads me to a funny story I'll share with you guys.  Friends of mine have a daughter who's been babysitting my 2 older girls since they were babies, one day my girls who were 7 and 5 at the time went to their house to see their new GSD pup.  In the living room was this huge wired dog cage clearly too big for the 10 week old pup but plenty big enough for him to grow into.  My 2 girls were fascinated with the fact the cage was big enough for them to fit into so as a joke the people took a picture of my girls inside the crate while the pup was on the outside lookin' in at them. lol  I laughed my butt off when they showed it to me- we still laugh about it to this day because the dog now barely fits in there and the girls have grown up just as fast.  I've saved that picture for when they graduate from high school so I can post it on their collage.  Memories like that are worth a million.  Just goes to show you how much joy children and dogs bring to a family.  You could tell stories for ages.  Makes all the couch chewing and annoying things worth while.

For all of those who tell you a crate is cruel, ask them if they would put a baby in a play pen if they left the room. The Crate is not for the dog to live in, just to give you a small amount of peace and assurance the house will be still standing when you return. It also comes in handy for them to be crate trained when they are ill and have to be quiet. Agreed, boredom and lack of excerise is not a good thing, However, there are some dogs that only need a little cat nap and the energy level is back and over the top.
