This is the pedigree for my PPD.  I have the same problem as Kelly.  I have to put my passenger in the van first or no one comes near it.  Drive thru windows are a special challenge lol.  http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/492454.html

I have seen a lot of Manto Kahlenbach progeny and in general they make excellent PPD's - very suspicious (some too much for my taste), self confident, tough, and as civil as it gets.  They can be handler aggressive though.  Not dogs I'd ever want to mess with.  I have a Manto granddaughter and she does not really fit the mold, even though I've been told her sire is very very tough.  She is social with people  - the other Manto dogs I've seen are NOT.  She is very confident and does display a lot of aggression in bitework, but is not the on the edge maneater many other Manto progeny I've seen are.  Not to say she's not protective, but she does recognize a real threat, whereas the other Manto does I've seen see a threat in everyone.  But some people need that in a PPD and Manto is great for that!

jade,

My female was also a Rex v haus Iris granddaughter. She was just like you described your female. Very serious, and it was all natural.

you can look her up under Layla Von Boeselager. She was extremely protective of her property and her of me.

I think you need to clarify what you mean by "personal protection dog" as you'd be surprised at what some people's conception could be.

I remember going to a PSA club and there was a lady there with a showline female that was afraid of her own shadow, and yet her owner had worked with her under the direction of the club to make a "personal protection" dog out of her.  I watched the lady's dog stick right by her side and when a guy approached she told the dog "Guard!" and the little bitch started barking and snarling and pulled taunt on the line.

A guy would have to be seriously stoned to walk up to a lady with a dog showing teeth like that.  But is this a "real" personal protection dog?  In my book, no.  But to her, yes.

Hi Yvette,

I define MY personal protection dogs that are trained not only in the art of protection, but trained to my various moods/feelings, etc...I also define MY personal protection dogs (Naya so far) as willing to protect me with her life, and not stop no matter what they hit her with. I think having a personal protection dog takes dedication, for sure, constant training, not to mention training yourself as how to handle a dog, and how not to let your emotions come on too strong, if you have that serious of a bond with your dog.

I think the bond between Naya and I is because I raised her since she was 6 weeks old, and I was there through her bad times, and she was there trhough mine. In the middle of the night, in a not so good neighborhood (Nope, not where I live, which is population 500) I can walk confidently with her, knowing that I have personally trained her to respond to my emotions. Some (most) would STRONGLY NOT RECOMMEND doing this, but I trained her with my own knowledge, never visited a SchH club or field, and yet, I think our bond is deep, and we have that level of trust.

She can do just as much as any other personal protection dog, and she certainly is NOT sleeve happy, once that sleeve's off, she goes back for more, screw the sleeve, she wants a piece of flesh! She can do the bark and hold, the escape bite, the long bite, you name it, I've taught it to her. Do I see myself doing professional personal protection? Probably not, but I took detailed notes after each and EVERY session, and believe I could train another to do what Naya and I could do.

Okay, I'll stop rambeling, but good question Yvette.

I hope this does not offend anyone but I have to say this. I have heard alot of dog owners say "I know my dog will bite anyone that trys to hurt me or "my dog will protect me no matter what"  No one can say that their dog will defend them until they have been attacked in a real situation.

I know everyone wants to believe their dog will protect them but you will never know until it happens. I too feel confident that my female will protect me but I do not know for sure because I have never been attacked or threatened. I hope I am never in this situation or anyone else.

I know that their are dogs out there that have protected their owners and will lay down their life for them and some have died doing it. IMO a PPD is to give you enough time to get away but if someone is stupid enough to go after you with a big dog at the end of a leash they will most likely have some type of weapon and that can also be used to kill your dog and possibly you too.

Denise,

I HAVE been attacked...less than a month ago. Naya DID put her life on the line. Luckily, I also keep a backup in my back pocket...10% Pepperspray, which is illeagle, but screw that, I've getting attacked, I'd rather blind the bastard than get raped or robbed.

Sorry, just thought I'd mention it.
