ziegenfarm I agree there are alot of unanswered questions.  My dogs have done great on Canidae.  BUT I am not willing to risk any kind of poisoning to my dogs.  So for now the Canidae got dumped and I bought some Solid Gold Wolf King for my pregnant girl.

shasta thanks for the pointer.  I just cleaned out the airtight container and it was kinda gross at the bottom.  I will definitely be using a liner from now on.

how would acetominephen get into the plant where they make/package the food? i don't use this dog food (rc gsd) but i don't understand where the contaminants would come from.

I was feeding my brood the All Life Stages Canidae for approx 5 months, had switched from Royal Canin 24.  Both dry foods were always fed along with RAW but I had a horrible experience with Canidae - coats on all dogs looked awful, lost weight, very smelly stools, also very dark in color and chewing on paws.  Switched back to RC24 about 4 weeks ago (with RAW) and immediate turn around of coats/sheen, weight gain, and stools are fewer and less smelly, and back to normal color.  Will never use Canidae again - now pissed about hearing of possible toxicity.   I used to use a container for food but switched to keeping in original bags - seems much less chance of bacterial growth, etc.  Besides, 40# bags only last 2 weeks anyway ...if I'm lucky...

how would acetominephen get into the plant where they make/package the food?

It is produced in the same plant (probably using the same machinery) where the food substances (vitamin pre-mixes, etc.) are made. There must have been some chemical residue/contaminant left on the machinery.

OTH, a dog/cat food such as The Honest Kitchen has more rigorous controls as it is produced in a plant using the same machinery use in the production of human foods.

I am so glad that, when one of my males recently spent about 6 weeks with two breeders who feed Canidae, I supplied my own supplements and insisted that he be fed RAW and the premium, grain-free kibble that I requested.

It sure makes you wonder, are we getting dog food in our tylenol?

OK,  I had 2 dogs come down with lack of appetite, vomitting and diarrhea but was not sure where it stemmed from.  After this post I contacted the distributor I purchased the Innova dry from and they want me to return the bag for refund.  So, I want to take a few cup fulls and have it tested myself.  Where do I go?  The bag is open in the kitchen, the 2 adult dogs and the 2 puppies in my home would not go near it.  Did not try to steal food.

Where to now?  Thanks for any response.

Louise, what kibble did you insist upon?

Makes me want to just make their food from my own human grade food for them all from now on. I may start to do that--this is getting ridiculous!  :( As hard as it is with multiple dogs, their needs need to be put first.

I have had good luck thus far with the Royal Canin, Solid Gold and Fromm.

SHEEESH!

Maren, please refer to this thread for my lengthy, multi-post discussion of diet:

BTW, I have sent you a private email and hope that I have your correct email address (the Yahoo one rather than Hotmail). I feed one of the grain-free kibbles (discussed in the above link) primarily as a source of caloric density--and for ease of feeding during travel or boarding.

Sunshine, I emailed the lady who tested the food. Here is the lab http://www.expertox.com. the cost is $200. But they are the only lab that you can have it done and not have to provide a list of things to search for.

I use a container, so I am going to wait until I buy new food so I can take the sample right out of the bag, and have mine tested. dogs look good, but I am tired of this and changing foods and the vet bills , THE GUILT.  I have about 3 weeks of food left, then I will send it in.  i also spent many a day taking my Mom's dog for treatment because of the food issues. So I am just going to do it.

I use Eagle pack, Holistic, dry kibble

if anyone else is going to do this, can we keep a list of the foods we check out? if you want to check your food maybe someothers on the board use the same brand and you can go into together to keep the cost down.

My daughter uses Timber Wolf, I would be willing to kick in for that brand.

Thanks Louise, I received your email and have some research to do.

In the short term though, I don't feel like giving up my bag of Innova to the distributor.  This post was like a light bulb going on.  I just could not understand why Eischa as well as Galaxy came down with diarrhea, lack of appetite and vomitting.  The distributor tried to put it off to my switching foods.  But both had had this food before and did well and enjoyed eating it.  Eischa is really the test dog.  She won't touch anything that is mass produced, even raw meat.  She will vomit up eggs that are not organic or chickens from mass production.  Otherwise she is not your typical sensitive GI track GSD.  So, she is a barometer in my household especially since she has good food drive and thinks she is being kept too thin.  She threw up Innova.  Galaxy didn't and I guess that is why he is suffering the most.

Again, Birdy I can't thank you enough.  I am convinced the bag is contaminated.

The dogs are doing fine now since I am not soaking the food and trying to mask it with other stuff.  They are back to Eukanuba Lamb and Rice and Galaxy I still have on I/D since his diarrhea was the worst.  Both are on probiotics and have alot of spirit again. I am sure they are not going to get any worse.  The pups were not fed Innova so no worry there.

I am pissed though.  I love these dogs.  I certainly don't want to poison them!
