Dawg: Someone addressed the difficulty in getting rid of of Giardia...it is one of the worst to get out of your domain...You must use the disenfect that Olskol suggested as it is one of the only ones that works and stops the cysts....this fast moving parasite lives outside the body of the dog on the kennel floor, the grass , the dirt and every place he poops or scrapes his butt. You have to disenfect everything and you as a human can also get it...It is usually transmitted by drinking contaminated water,,,,,,and if you have rain that has filled your property and their have been feces of humans or other animals washed into your domain , or where you train,,,,that is how he got it...dogs drink and eat everything......water is the main culprit for washing these nasty fellas where dogs can come accross them....that why I ask about a creek, or a pond. also shallow wells or any water well that is not filtered could have been contaminated by human feces or animal feces....when I first moved to the country I though well water straight out of the well to my kennels was awesome......wrong........all water should be filtered...and when you hike,camp or travell ,,,water filters should go with you in your suitcase.....Brita makes a travel kit .....water is the main source for giardia....
You have to keep the grass sand or desert scooped up immediately and you be careful...one wipe of your nose , your eyes or fingers touch your mouth with this on it,,,you will have it also.....I suggest you bathe your pup every 5 days with head and shoulders, and make sure you disenfect for 20 minutes to 30 minutes , let stand on spots, and kennel..,then rinse....
Now to the scare for the rest of Us....Raw meat is sometimes the culprit of Giardia along with E coli.....so dont be surprised if it happens,,,check where you get your raw meat and make sure it is super fresh,,,if you cant be sure dont buy it.....many a shipment of beef or organ meats contain the giardia cyst and it lives a long time inside and outside the contaminated source....all animals and humans that injest anything that has water wash on it with feces contamination , or if you go to a public restroom and touch the counter top where someone with it has been and left a cyst of the giardia,,,you get it..... It is entered by your hand contact with eating or wiping your mouth, picking your teeth with a finger nail. or scratching your eyes with your fingers that have touched the giardia....same with dogs.....so Dawg , you havae a lot of work do you have other dogs or animals....

Yellowrose- This is what I keep hearing. The problem is we have nearly an acre the dogs have constant access to. Used to be open desert until about a year ago when we put up a block wall. So, I'm not worried about outside influences as much as what's already in the soil. I don't see how I can treat this much land. Especially with it being monsoon season. We get torrential rain for an hour or so (at least) a day. Land is so dry the water pools for about an hour afterwards and everything mixes together. I am trying to really pushing the handwashing for the kids. I think I'm becoming more of a germaphobe as I get older anyway.
Trailrider-He LOVES liverwurst. But does it like a carmel apple. Eats the good and leaves the middle. I'm back to just cramming! But, I have great training treat-liverwurst-stinky-ball things.

dawgs so glad at least you have a training treat! Try one more thing, if you have another dog (?), make a few balls. Three w/o the pill. Toss one to your other dog, then one to your male with giardia. Do it again and second time his has the pill. If you only have the one guess your stuck with craming.... the competition usually gets them to gulp it before the other guy has a chance for it.
If you want another thing to do with the liverwurst, when he gets crated or left or just a treat... buy a marrow bone from Petsmart and stuff some in the middle. Keeps them occupied for awhile licking it clean.

I wouldn't worry about the whole place,,,Just kennel pup when it rains that way, and disenfect the main house , porch , patio and garage , kennels and floors in your home ...mop with a solution of odo ban or the one olskol told you about....
He quite possible had it when you got him....how old is he?
Good luck;;
I would rather treat for giardia than distemper or parvo...so consider yourself lucky...just another one of those things in the life of a dog...

Yellowrose,
"I like it once in a while on bread with lettuce and miracle whip....."
Try a nice thick slice of Vidalia onion with that. Delicious and no one will bother you the rest of the day!
