K9sar, the AKC does not produce or change the breed standards, the parent clubs do that. Any changes must be ratified by a majority vote of the membership of the breed club doing the changing. TheGSDCA generated and aprroved the breed standard here in the US which is remarkedly like the SV standard. It's all there in black and white, but breeders ignore it all and breed what they want. All AKC does is to offer a guideline to each breed club so that there is continuity in the wording from one standard to the other. It makes it easier for judges to understand what each breed is looking for in the ideal specimen. AKC also recommends that certain traits are addressed in each standard - coat color, texture, length, size of dog at withers, degree of angulation, head shape, ear carriage, what is allowed as far as ear cropping, tails docking, those sorts of things.
Many of the Amish puppy millers here in PA are not registering their puppies with AKC, they use one of the splinter registries so as to keep them out of the AKC paperwork loop. Now they are free to breed without keeping a paperwork trail of their breedings and no chain of ownership is required either.

Yes the AKC is killing the GSD...as we know and love it. They are completely a money maker. They charge for everything. Ever try to get through to someone that knows something? Good Luck! I have been dealing with the AKC for over 20 years. Either we have to change our show date (which is a total nightmare) or something else is going on. How can an organization that allows Andrew Hunte and the likes of him in it be worth anything?

And another thing! Have you gone to an AKC conformatiion show lately? Sad and I mean sad. They need to drop a picture of the standard down from the ceiling so the judges can get an idea of what they should be judging. If Jimmy is in the ring it doesn't even matter what he is showing. NONE of the American judges would dare not to put him up. I guess they think something bad will happen to them if they don't.
The AKC does NOT educate the public about puppy mills, pet stores etc. They just sit there and count their money and to the devil with the millions of dogs being put to sleep each year. I am sure they love people like Hunte, more registrations for them, more money for them.

The breed clubs are responsible for the breeds ups and downs. The standard has not changed, but no one is willing to go against these judges.
Who are the people in charge of the GSD club??? Are they show people??? I would even support bringing in the world seiger and VA dogs and show them extensively here in the states. When they do not win, then we raise a huge stink, and remove the judge.
The way it is, is that people are to willing to say, " thats how it goes" and they change something that is not theirs to change. We squall like little bitches on these boards, but don't say BOO to anyone that can actually do anything about it. Not like I am different either, I am seeing some sad stuff in my sport that I cannot figure out how to address. I know what I will say, but I also know what they will hear.

I believe Hunte was denied membership.

It's like people who say the gun killed someone. Its was not the gun but the person shooting the gun.. same for the AKc , it's all the people who practice bad breeding practices..

this all confuses me, i have a german GSD, i was told by the breeder not to breed him with american GSD, is his breeding GOOD or BAD? his name is BOSS VON HOGG PHELPS if yall wanna look at his pedigree.

by animules on 25 July 2007 - 02:07
Boss' breeding is fine. The breeder didn't want his line diluted with the Am show shepherd lines. I like your Boss.

Blitzen, I believe his membership in the GSDCA was withdrawn, but I think I heard he's a member of several other breed clubs. Puppy millers don't just stick to the one breed, ya know!!

Well the AKC is just paper pusher we all know that, so to improve the breed it goes to the GSDCA to assest in this right?? Well you look at their website and where do you find advertisements for the working class GSD ( no where ). So to improve the americian breeding to get to the working caliber they are not doing anything. I am a working dog person, I would rather show what my dogs abilities are then just to look pritty, If that is what GSCA is all about then they should sell pritty statues of a GSD. Lets bring back their real roots for the reason they were breed.
