They claim to be in love with Trigger at the groomer where I bring him.  I almost believed it until they said the same thing about the crazy alpha male. I guarantee they put a muzzle on him.

<>This time around after Trigger is cleaned up I am going to keep him brushed every day and save myself the $50. Most of his coat wasn't too bad when I checked him over last night. I could only find one funky looking burr or something. But his back legs were matted and all I was doing was brushing over the top without getting the hair underneath. A friend suggested a horsebrush??? but figured I'd just pay up and get a fresh start.

Get a powerblower and blow his coat out really well at least oncea week.   It keeps the hair from webbing/matting up as much andkeeps the dog cooler.   It also makes brushing them out much easier. If his coat is in bad shape you could have him groomed first but makesure you request that they power blow him out and don't cage dry him.Once he's been groomed it will be much easier for you to use the blower on his coat.

I need one of those. A week later and my showline girl still looks great after being blown out! They do a super job cleaning ears too!

I also have the groomer trim the paws, belly and pants of my long coat.   My previous long coat never matted, but by the time she reached 12 - I had to have her trimmed way down under tail and back legs to keep her clean.  My one year old long coat seems to mat behind the ears, so next grooming I will insist that they trim them out as well.  I have never shaved my long coats, just keep them trimmed up and brushed out.

Thanks all for the grooming suggestions yesterday. I requested the blowdry today and Trigger looks about the best I've ever seen him and feels so soft I've got the whole neighborhood over here petting him :D  When I picked him up the gal behind the counter said, "Boy, he looks like a great big German Shepherd." I was afraid to ask what they thought he was.

I know it is so funny when they try and guess what a breed a long coat is? I had someone tick me off one time, I over heard her telling her friend that that what you get when you breed muts. So I explained to her the gene pool, when I had her interest, I then told her because they are so rare, you can not get your hands on them because they are rare and cost over $20,000. At this point she was wanting one. I told her they are from Germany and they are the very old original gene pool of the GSD. I explained how you have to go to Germany and scour the country side and find a old Hearder and talk him into selling you one.        Was to funny...............
