eldorado, I agree, very tough call and certainly always a risk. I have done this twice, one went very well and the second time (different breeder)the dog had Giardia and was pregnant! Like Don said, try to use someone you know or comes from multiple good reference. Most of the time the photos listed are old and do not reflect the real state of affairs with the dog. I think it is within reason to request a copy of a health certificate prior to purchase. And as stated do plenty of home work! If you can't get enough good info then I recommend staying clear and find another dog. There are plenty of really good contacts on the message board so use your references. Hope all goes well!

Take your time and be careful. For a first time buyer I would suggest you locate a USA breeder as we have many trustworthy excellent ones here. Plus you can go visit several kennels which is what I suggest you do. Their are trustworthy breeders to import from but if you search this messageboard you will be many top dog breeders here in the states have been screwed importing dogs and yes even buying here. But you have more legal recourse here if cheated while importing you have none. Again, look around you might be suprised on the quality. Good luck

I think if you are about to invest the kind of money one needs to obtain foundation stock from Europe, you should factor in a flight to Europe. You get what you pay for in the end. Then there is the language barier, unfamiliar territory, etc etc. Take a German speaking friend or college student (translator). Carefull planning, research, hours on google maps, rental car....I would guess the only reason you want a dog from Europe is for breeding and the wow factor of having an imported dog in your kennel considering all the excellent dogs available in the US. I would never trust someone I havent met in person and deffinately never buy a dog based on photos unless I new the breeder personally. I think if you absolutely must have a dog from Europe, plan a vacation around the sieger show, see the sights, make lots of friends, dont anticipate flying back with a dog but I bet you wouldnt have a hard time finding one under those conditions. The saying goes, you always find the perfect "whatever" when your not looking for it.
