I am a breeder with a passion for the East German Lines. I have a few dogs with mixed Czech, Slovak and West German Lines, but my heart lies with the East Dogs. I do work my dogs and am actively training and competing in Schutzhund. I have seen late bloomers in all the lines but when you hear people refer to East dogs maturing late, I believe they are referring to true aggression and defensive drives that sometimes don't develop or present in some of the eastern dogs until 2 to even 4 years old. In your particular situation - owning a dog that is primarily a companion dog, I am not sure that you would have much to worry about. Mostly people who are making that statement are referring to a dog's development of drives as it relates to protection sports.

I have a couple East German lineage dogs that are nice sport dogs and others that are not really good sport dogs. For the most part, the east lines do not have the flash and high, high drives that are desired in modern day high level Schutzhund.

Hope that helps
