You guys - I can only say - thank you so much for your help and your information. I will spend and go and do whatever I must. He is a wonderful dog and enables me to lead a normal life - I was attacked when I was 21 - and like the DCI and FBI said it was a bruttle attack and I was very fortunate -I should always have my GSD with me - much better than a gun............ - he goes everywhere with me.......I can't stand to think I am on my 3rd GSD - he is everything you would want and are ever looking for ---- only good qualities- he has all of his Obed/tracking/he is had his CGC at 7 mon. and is a Certified Therapy Dog that goes to 3 Nursing homes for visits - and is now is a READ program for children - sometimes I feel like I need a "support group for IMA" once again I respect what I read on this board and appreciate your input. I will be busy on the phone on Monday...........
one last thing - Blitzen- how the heck did you get so smart........he is on 20 mg a day - and in 1 month will go down to 1 every other and the 1/2 every other - what do you think of that treatment plan? I was so happy that you asked about the mg. dose - and commented that you have heard that is a low dose for a dog that is 90lbs......one last thing the head Orthopedic Vet at the U said that he can run his 1 or 2 miles daily and continue on what he wants to do - do you think that is ok

Renz, I've had dogs for almost 50 years now (yeah, I'm old)and worked for many years as a vet tech for one of the best vets in the country, he is the guy I emailed about your dog. After all of that, I guess I've seen just about all there is to see where dogs are concerned LOL.
I think your vet is doing the right thing and giving you excellent advice. I would do as he says.

just wishing you all the very best!!!
I've also used both Davis and CSU and recommend either.

Renz, I talked to the vet I told you about. He is working with chickens now - LOL - so is not familar with any studies being done at the University of PA regarding immune mediated arthritis in dogs. If you feel you need an additional consult, you might want to try one of the clinic others have suggested here.
Good luck and I hope he continues to do well.

Hey Blitzen,
Thank you for following up. My beautiful GSD is doing well - tolerating the Pred. - please say a prayer for me - Saturday is his last day of everyday dose and then down to 1 (20mg) tab every other day.......if no swelling occurs - if swelling returns even slightly they will do one day Pred. and one day Azathioprine - it is a chemo drug used in conjuction with Prednisone........I have done some research because as you know when a U of M vet mentions chemo drug - but really it is ok - to my understanding - very tolerated etc. He is a healthy beautiful male GSD and she does not want it to affect those joints. So thank you and if you have any feedback on any thing above - let me know - and I did laugh when you said you were old!
