Sorry-Just saw on your original post the N. Carolina part.

Well yea I have been around kennels and breeders so sure I know the difference. I would love hands on experience with training Mali's (to see their level of intelligence in action would be an awesome sight). I appreciate all the info you guys are giving me.

I understand about the breed not being for everyone that's a lot of breeds with a high octane tank that thirst for more socialization, training, working and just more. My black lab Deke was like that full blooded registered he was one of the most energetic and intelligent dogs I have ever seen(and I have been around a lot of well trained animals) especially when he was hunting he was an intense dog.

I love energetic and intense yet very intelligent dogs the activity rate and drive has to be there. I want that companion/worker class/protective watch dog/best friend for the next 10-15 years or more

A good friend of mine got a malinios from Bergit at Alertk9 in Reidsville, nc. Darn nice dog. She would be the go to in my opinion, and her prices are very reasonable, but mainly she knows dogs.
Good luck, happy training:-)

Vom Haus Hall .. ie aka Alert K9 .. Birgit Hall .. both imports and breeds GSD and Mal .. more police oriented dogs .. not so much pets.

Bubba, true about police dogs, but the Mali my friend got is so clear in the head,he is calm in the house, but balls to the wall when training. Excellent nose work. I'll see if I can find a short clip my friend sent me. Bergit has sound dogs both temperament and structure.

Mals are great if you want crazy drives ... how much crazy drive do you want?? Also depends if you want a puppy that can be shaped but is also a bit of a wild card ( all puppies are wild cards ) or if you want a green or older dog already settled. I think all puppies but Mal puppies perhaps more than GSD need a huge amount of puppy education and human face time. Most people with Mals will show you their latest scar and it may not be the dog's fault they have a new scar .. I have had some GSD dogs that are do then think type dogs with blinding speed during training or play .. a lot of Mals are the same way. My experience is that most crazy drive GSD are better able to compensate for their human's "operator errors" than crazy drive Mals. Just be careful what you wish for with Mals.

Birgit has excellent dogs.
I have owned 2 from her, and a friend of mine has gotten several.
She stands behind her dogs, and will place a puppy/dog with you according to your needs and ability.
Dogs that I have had and my friend have had were all social and very stable that came from her kennel.

If you are willing to look outside of your state, then please consider these kennels as they have a track record of producing some really great pups and these breeders use their own breedings in the sports they are invlolved with:

Ot Vitosha (http://malinois.com/malinois/);  Loups du Soleil (http://loupsdusoleil.com/) and Chasseur Malinois (http://www.chasseurmalinois.com/)

Birgit and Haus Hall are a good kennel with some great dogs and Birgit is a pro breeder. Birgit and Alert K9 ( aka Haus Hall ) used to be all GSD but has started in the last 5-6 years with more Mals since a big part of her client base is law enforcement and law enforcement type buyers. Mals have become popular with LE due to lower initial cost, faster maturity, and longer working life than most GSD available. Most LE dogs are not pets or house dogs unless retired ( old age ) so the personality or over the top drives of a Mal are not a problem for LE handlers. Ot Vitosha is Ivan Balabanov and Loups de Soleil is Michael Ellis (a partner) kennel so those dogs are bred for high drives and high level competition such that going and seeing the dogs in person is a must.
