My mother's boyfriend isn't in town apparently, if he calls I will ask him, but here is a listing for a house in Melbourne, FL http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Melbourne-FL/pmf,pf_pt/43486588_zpid/19307_rid/28.311635,-79.852067,27.36323,-81.637345_rect/9_zm/?3col=true

Yes, it is Rtdmmcintyre! My mom's bf got lucky because he's a veteran so he's on the VA loan for his home and paying just $900 in mortgage alone, plus HOA, water, etc.
GSDtravels, if you go back to the link you do have an option of looking at rent only homes that are available as well. The west coast is a LOT cheaper compared to the east coast. You also have to be careful of renting, my sister and her husband had to move twice because the landlord decided to stop paying the mortgage and foreclosed on the house without telling them in advance, the bank had to send a letter to them. Also, you have to look at the pet policy because a lot of the houses may have homeowners insurance already that doesn't allow for certain breeds of dogs. Here's a link to some homes for rent, it should still show low to high prices, if not just click on the pricing option. Its better to go from low to high first.

I know on the east coast the middle is about $1400-$2000/per month depending on the type of house. My sister and her husband usually moves every year because of the cost of the rent and one time they were paying $1800 for a house that was valued for $300,000.

I've searched both Zillow and Craigslist and I've found the opposite. While some of the rents are a bit higher on the east coast, the housing looks more worth it on the east coast. Some of the housing I've seen on the Gulf side is pretty run down and seedy in my price range! I've found a few really nice ones ones on the east coast for 1000 or under. Here's an example, a little further north than I'd like, but just about in range. It's a little small but absolutely adorable and has a great yard for my dog.
I could watch rocket launches from Cape Canaveral, it's close enough to the beach, it's in the historic district and I've walked the neighborhood on Googel Earth. It's a really nice neighborhood, no HOA, quiet, perfect! Downsides: No dishwasher, no screened outdoor space, one bath (I'd prefer 2 or at least a powder room). But the yard is key, my dog needs free space in his golden years and I want fruit trees and bushes, so it's perfect! I could always buy a screen tent or build something myself.
