Ok then don't take it as given that all the givens are given and that all givens are gifts.

unless it is given that all gifts are given and all givens are gifts that are given as given gifts.

Unless its not given that the given givens are given as gifts that are given given they are given as gifts.

Maybe. I doubt it, though. I stop looking when the gerbil thing, (* infinite regressive argument*)— now, becomes apparent.

Do what you gonna buy me??

Not me. I wish Erin still was around to give you a spanking. You need something, or other.

"""ML: I understand that wonder would be a normal part of the emotional experience in the unexpectedness of a gift that can answer a recipients innermost desires (including wishes), to the point of never being mentioned to others. However think of other types of gift giving practiced as a tradition, a rite, a message."""

I think perception comes into play here Bee. For instance the average person gets up in the morning and EXPECTS to see the Sun shinning and they walk outside and EXPECT to get a breath of fresh air. They take this as a GIVEN. It becomes unemotional to them.

Now if we take say a cancer survivor, they may wake up in the morning and be overwhelmed with appreciation to the start of another nice day. This is a gift to them.

I think society in general has drifted over to the given side, expecting everything as a given, with less appreciation. Like the way Holidays have become over-commercialized.

To me it's somewhat like Oli making improvements on this site. A bunch of people will thank him and a few (pain in the asses) will say something like you should have done that 2 years ago.

You're probably looking for a different answer, just my $.02 on Gift vs Given.

ML,

Your thoughtful answer is what I am looking for! Also, to address your last comment, I am not exactly "looking" for any particular answer. I might have my own personal suspicions about some possible conclusions, if the right question gets to be asked. Nothing concretely formed to what that is, as yet!
