I like the company but the food doesn't agree with my oldest dog (not a GSD). He does much better on "limited ingredient diets". I'm not a grain-free purist but won't feed corn, wheat, soy, gluten meal, and I don't like that the Fromm diets have lists of ingredients a mile long but if it "agrees" with a dog's gut then I use it. My pit bull is eating the one that comes in the purple bag (under $40 for 33lbs). She has an iron gut.

When you guys say purple, do you mean the CLASSIC line not the GOLD line? Purple bag in the gold line is for small breeds. Purple and silver bag in the classic line is for big dogs...but it's a lower quality line than the gold. Lots more grain.

Mine is like a shimmery purple and silver. It's not the Gold one I don't think, it's lesser quality (and cheaper), but still better than 90% of other commercial pet foods. I feed it to my pit bull b/c she loves it and has an iron gut. She was a street dog and then a shelter dog so anything above trash/scraps and whatever crap they feed in a shelter is quality for her! She does good on it, she's put on some muscle without getting fat. When I got her she was 27lbs, had almost a whippet physique, and her coat had sort of a gray-ish hue. Now she is closer to 40lbs but you can still see her ribs, and her coat is shiny (the gray stripe on the top is now black). I don't feed it to my 5 month old puppy or my other dogs. I don't think it's good for a little puppy, and my other dogs (5 year old GSD and 7 year old mutt) do very well on a different food so I'm reluctant to change them, plus being adults they eat less. The pit bull eats almost as much as they do even though she's half their size.

Didn't mean it was a bad food, just misleading since Bob asked about the gold and someone else said purple bag. Yours is really a purple label, not bag. Just wanted to be clear b/c I know the purple bag in the gold line is for small breeds.
I have had similar experience w/Pits and food- my bf's little APBT looked very shiny but VERY skinny on Orijen. She is 34lbs, give or take, and ate the same amount, then more Orijen than Capri eats...and got very skinny. She seems to really need some carbs in her food, much to my dismay. Due to weather, my shipment of Orijen was delayed and we had to buy her food locally at the Menards near us because every small place was closed for the blizzard. I got her Diamond Naturals Extreme Athelete and mixed it with the little bit of Orijen we had left. She looked so much better after just one bag. I'm working on finding a higher quality kibble to feed her with chicken leg quarters. Much as I like Orijen, I am NOT dumping it into a dog in those quantities at that price if it clearly is not keeping weight on her. I have not ruled out a medical issue with her yet, but still...Capri is a big bitch- she eats 3 cups of Orijen per day. I don't mind spending the money on her and she looks good. Seven was eating 4 cups and while shiny as all get-out, looked like a skeleton. I don't think I ever tried Fromm classic for her- that may be something to think about. I wanted to try the new Acana formula for hard working dogs but no one distributes it near me. :(

You're right, it's the "Classic" line, not the purple "Gold". I used Gold a few years ago (the black or green bags) and Pan and Coke did not do well. Both got SUPER itchy, Coke was literally pulling out clumps of fur, both dogs ended up getting all these red areas and scabs, like minihotspots. Also the poops were the most foul smelling poops ever. I know, it's POOP, lol, but on their current kibble, there is almost no smell unless they are sick or got into something else. Since there are so many ingredients, I had no idea how to even begin to narrow it down so just went back to what I had been using, the "limited ingredient" diet which Coke does fantastic on and the other dogs seemed good too so that's what I used. Now that I have more dogs and the price goes up, I want some of the dogs on Fromm so I tried this one with Indy (the pit) and she's doing good. I may try Legend on it when he's old enough. The Gold is definitely better but doesn't save me $$$ compared to the LID they eat now, so if I'm going based on ingredients, I wouldn't switch. I think this one is cheap b/c of the chicken. Indy loves it though and looks great! She just eats and eats and eats though, and is quite active so she would eat me bankrupt if I gave her pre-made raw or a grain-free kibble!
