If the pup is 6 months old and you like it, then I don't care if the papers say it's a direct descendant of Rin Tin Tin. 
6 months is old enough to get a good idea; if your life was on the line, then a finished product is better. If you just want a dog you can train to be a reasonable deterrent plus a bit extra, then 6 months is probably old enough, provided whoever tested it knows what they're doing. Go for it if you like the dog and are comfortable with the seller.
