LF: Exactly my point! Almost makes you want to thank the poor slobs!

Here in NC if a dog is harassing your livestock you are well within your rights to shoot it on spot. Loose dogs with no collar are in the same boat. Document document document, pictures and/or video. Build your case. I would not be paying a dime. There may not be a leash law, but most counties still require the dog to be under control of its owners. As you probably can tell, I don't tolerate this BS on my property. A less deadly option would be paint balls.

To shoot another persons dog?? Sounds barbaric to say the least, definitely troublesome though and white trash neighbors definitely. No luck with AC; call a rescue organization and have them picked up. Fine the owners. Fence in your front yard?? Keep your animals safe at any cost, that is why I go away from my neighborhood to exercise my shepherd to keep "him" out of trouble. As if YOUR dog bites the loose dogs or a person, kid or adult, guess what, you have a real problem. What is wrong with our system? I would just protect your dogs at any cost. Use pepper spray if they come on your property again. Let those owners tie the sob's up, whatever to keep them home. Yes I would probably move if nothing can be done. JMHO Nan

It may sound barbaric, but a bullet is cheaper then a fence. I feel sorry for the dog, but I refuse to be afraid to walk out MY front door. Usually, dogs will get one warning shot. If they come back....... I've not actually had to shoot a dog yet, thank goodness. I will not modify the activities on my property for fear someone's dog is going to come and start crap. Same deal if one of those loose dogs were to come after one of my kids.

It's sad because these people have kids they don't care for also. They come over here for breakfast because momma still asleep at noon and they are hungry.. My dogs love kids and would never bite one of them, but it's a different story about their dogs coming over.. It's like I'd have to put a fence up to protect THEIR dogs, since mine are put in their pen when we are not home to watch them. Animal control is a joke out here, their response is shoot the dogs, and I just would feel horrible about shooting a kid"s pet.. But I like the idea of them coming up missing and turning them into a rescue! It's not a bad neighborhood, there are only 2 sets of trashy neighbors, but they live on opposite ends of the dirt road, so they are constantly walking up and down the rode to each other's houses.. We have called the law numerous times about the kids being un-cared for, infested with lice, rotten teeth, unsupervised.. Their response is it's not a crime to be poor?? I just get so frustrated since I make sure my dogs are kept up and are behaving, but these people are always causing drama over something.. Guess there are those kinds of people everywhere.. Just wanted to rant on them!! :)

I would call child protective services if LE won't do anything about it. They are obligated to report cases of possible neglect.

Were I live its a crime to neglect your children. This includes failing to adequately feed them and care for their health..

by Hundmutter on 30 August 2013 - 05:08
It IS no crime to be poor, but being poor does not automatically
mean neglect of your children, yourself or your animals. The LE
dept. needs a wake-up call. Actually their attitude does a great
disservice to folk who are financially struggling, but don't act like
'trailer trash'.

I found that AC is a joke in rural areas.
My sister had a neighbor who had two starving bloodhounds, and one kept getting out. She got hit by a car and her hip was very swollen.
His attempt to put the dog down was by slitting her throat, which failed. The wound became infected.
I called NUMEROUS times, and they only came out after he'd shot the dog whose throat he'd slit. They couldn't do anything because they couldn't find the body, and his comment about the other bloodhound was, "They're supposed to be skinny." (She was EMACIATED).
I even had (and still have) photos of the other dog and her injuries, along with testimonial from my mom and sister of the neighbor coming over and GLOATING about his attempts to slit the dog's throat.
Nope. Nothin' they could do.
Compare that to out here in the city. Another local flyball team was out practicing. It was early in the morning, and it was in the mid to high 80's. Someone called AC about the dogs being in kennels. They came out to check on that. Given, everyone on the team and the ACO laughed about it, but they came out to check on something as simple as dogs being kenneled. (And it WAS stated that people were there - the person that made the complaint just felt that kennels were cruel)!
So I have seen how truly black and white AC is in rural areas are vs. the city.
As much as I hate to say it, if the only way you can make them listen and to save your chickens and any other livestock you may have is to threaten to shoot their dogs (or actually do it), then that may be your only option.
