thanks so much for getting to the bottom of that. I have just bought a big bag of the gastro food and would have been so pissed off if it turned out to be true. Deep down though, I knew that it just couldn't be. Well Maya can be rest assured she is eating responsibly now.

Thanks for explaining, I never heard of it, looks cruel.

Even feeding raw can't save people from all the stupidity on the planet.
What if you were to find out that your meat producers were using electric prods up the cows anus to kill them or they were stomping the chickens to death? Who you still by from a cruel animal killer?
Or because it's sold in plastic packages at the market does that make the meat immune to scrunity?
Just saying.

Coming from a ranching community, trust me to say that not all meat kills are humane.   Do a bit of research on veal (beef or lamb) and I will guarantee you will never eat it again.

by SitasMom on 29 July 2013 - 14:07

fawndallas, if you google "inhumane cattle slaughter", there are plenty of instances where the practices are less than humane.

Royal Canin is owned by Mars, a company that also produces Pedigree dog food.

Royal Canine Maxi Adult has chicken by-product meal, brewers rice, wheat, brown rice, chicken fat, corn gluten meal, natural flavors, dried beet pulp, fish oil, grain distillers dried yeast, calcium carbonate, salt, potassioum chloride, sodium siloco aluminate, monocalcium phosphate, choline chloride, L-lysine, taurine, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamins [DL-alpha-tocopherol (source of vitamin E), biotin, D-calcium, pantothenate, vitamin A acetate, niacin, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), thiamin mononitrate (vitamin B1), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement], trace minerals (zinc proteinate, zinc oxide, ferrous sulfate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite, copper proteinate), chondroitin sulfate, rosemary extract, preserved with natural mixed tocopherols and citric acid.

In red is problematic to dogs
Brown rice is a source of arsenic
Corn gluten meal causes joint swelling, bloating, allergies, metabolizes like sugar in humans and causes hyperactivity, made from GMO corn waste products and is linked to cancers
Wheat has no nutritional value and is linked to allergies
Chondroitin Sulfate is the cheapest most synthetic form and can cause loose stools, bloating, natural blood thinner, not to be used by pregnant or nursing dogs as it can contribute to reproductive problems
Glucosamine Hydrochloride is made from corn and outer shells of shellfish, usually coming from India or China, can cause allergies, bloating, chronic itching, gas, stomach upset
Salt can be used to cover up rancid meat byproducts and is unnecessary as a separate ingredient added to dog food, can contribute to kidney problems and blood pressure issues in older dogs
Chicken fat is a difficult to digest form of animal fat, can cause allergies
Vitamin D3 is hype and has not been proven to be necessary in dog food, additional source of PCBs and mercury
Beet pulp contributes to weight gain in dogs and metabolizes the same as sugar causing hyperactivity, diabetes, and allergies in dogs
Distillers dried yeast can suppress immune system in sensitive dogs

Blue is useless fillers that add nothing to the nutritional value
Chicken Byproduct Meal is everything BUT MEAT (i.e. feet, beaks, feathers, bones, you get the picture)
Biotin is not needed for dogs
DL-alpha-tocopheral acetate (vitamin E) is synthetic and has no nutritional value

FYI
L-Lysine is used to help dogs digest soy based products in dog foods that are generally listed under other names such as mixed tocopherols, natural flavorings, vitamin E, soy is fatal to dogs if they don't have the additive lysine to help digest it, soy is a cheap filler
Rosemary extract is controversial in dog food since it comes in concentrated liquid form and is used as a preservative, the safety of this has not yet been proven

Aren't I glad I feed my dog raw. I don't think I'll ever switch back to kibble if I can help it, much less feed Royal Canin.
