IMO, it's like the dog becoming accustomed to any animal or human, and regarding it as a pack member. My cousin's border collie was fine with the barn cats but would attack and kill any strange cat that ventured on the property.
My male GSD chased and likely would have killed my cat the first time he met it, but after me making it very plain the cat wasn't to be harmed, he accepted it and they became friends and would even play together. He even went into mourning when the cat was run over by a car!
