What I am curious is if this a general rule of the thumb or not. I realize there are exceptions.
On the working lines I have seen we have never had a longhair, the last litter had all sable pups..
I have seen several longhairs for sale on the internet.
It was an intersting article and yes on Arlett.

gsdlvr2..you are correct in your following statement:::
It says a DOG that produces DOMINATELY sable is homozygus for shorthair.it does NOT say a dog who is homozygus for sable pups produces only shorthair.

Have you ever heard of a dog named Kalle vom Welzbachtal?

He was the WUSV Sieger in 2002, FCI-B.Q.-Sieger 2001, LGA-Sieger 2005, 6 times BSP participant, 3 times WUSV participant. A workingline showline cross.

My typo... I had a homozygous workingline sable female (dominant and only produced sable). She had 28 puppies bred to a solid black and black/red males only. She had 2 long coated sables when bred to the working line solid black.

Kalle was a nice looking dog. Myself I do not prefer longhairs but can understand why some do.
That's sound close to what the article was referencing that usually a dominant sable produces shortcoats...
thanks for everone's input..
