Troopscott, I agree it's a fine way to run a puppy mill. I know a lady who does that and who has for many years. She co owns the bitches forever and pays the co owner so much per puppy. I think about 300. And that's exactly all she has ever done--she had exclusively white dogs but hell since they are so rare and worth so much she has gone to the darkest side with the dilutes being mixed in. I co own a couple of my girls and if I wanted out from under our relationship, all I have to do is give up the 1st and 3rd pick--that's how most of the people I know do it. I would never get into a deal where I had to do 3 litters--I bet they would want them all in a row too. And I wonder who pays for the AI if they do ship the semen?

I've seen it plenty of times. I might consider one litter with being able to keep a puppy but it wouldn't be worth it after that. The cost to raise a litter to place along with all the vetting and God forbid something happens to mom.....with all that money being spent, it would be easier to just buy the female outright. 3 litters is a bit selfish.

I've never heard of this being done with dogs (something similar with horses though). I personally wouldn't be able to deal with it, all costs aside I just don't think I would be able to let my dog be shipped off somewhere for three weeks to a place she barely knows with people she hasn't seen since she was a pup. I'd imagine it wouldn't be a very pleasant experience.

There are a number of people in the UK who have these kinds of
arrangements; with a KC 'Loan of Bitch' arrangement it is quite
easy to set up; but there are also some real abuses of the idea
perpetrated on the naive first-time breeder / owner of a bitch puppy
sold to them cheaply so they are ensnared by this kind of condition.

Hey Hund.........I know that through the AKC you can lease a bitch--probably about the same thing as the KC. I have no experience and have never even seen the app.
And Blain you are exactly right about shipping your girl here or there. I would never ever agree to anything like that. And none of my dogs would go for that. I have a girl here who is a serious one person dog. Well Bec took her over for the weekend to breed her. OK got 2 nice ties--she howled in her crate all night and I went and got her nexrt day. OK we had a show coming up and we needed 1 win to finish. Did that. Had an article to do for the paper , did that. I am sure the breeding took and then she lost the pups and resorbed--that may not be spelled right but you guys know what I am saying.......bottom line is she doesn't do well away from me and I think all of the factors combined just stressed her out..........JMO about things--bottom line is we aren't running a puppy mill--missing a breeding isn't the end of the world and I'm not going to stress any of my dogs just to make it so.......

There was a well known Rottweiler and Dobe kennel in the USA that did/does this with great success. Produces high quality all rounder family dogs.

A few of the police forces in the UK do this and have done so for a while. One benefit from doing it for the police is that all equipment, food and veterinary care are paid for by them.
