The last two cases I saw also resolved on their own in about a month (took a little longer for the hair to grow back in the places that lost hair, but the effected skin was healed within a month).

Whats wrong with Mitaban baths, are collies at risk with using it too? I've had two GSD dogs with demodex mange in the past. They got Ivermectin and couple of Mitiban baths, gone within 4 weeks and never came back. If a collie can't take Ivermectin, isn't Mitaban the only treatment thats left? Benzoyl peroxide shampoo, might be worth a try, but I've never used it specifically and exclusively for demodex mange. I see one of the articles posted above says to give heartguard, but I imagine the doesage they are recomending (600 micrograms/kg/day) would not be sufficient, pending on how severe the hair loss and overall infestation is at this point.

I don't think mitiban dips are specifically bad for Collies, but I think for most cases that is overkill to dip a dog when localized demo will clear on it's own in the same amount of time, or the underlying immune system issue needs to be addressed before dipping the dog in chemicals. For bad cases of generalized mange, yes it might be called for.

Although some may say that Selsun Blue will not take care of the demodex, it did work for us. The dog was bathed in it for 3weeks 2x's a wk. when she was brought to the vet to be spayed the vet said he did not find any live mites of any kind. That puppy was 7-8mos old at the time she was bathed in it. She has been spayed and now at 15months old, she once again has another outbreak. I would say since she has been spayed and no stress of coming in heat could be the culprit of bringing it on, it is a very weak immune issue. JMO

ProMeris for dogs,
I use to work for a vet, and we had a client find a Shih Tzu that looked like he had been set on fire and stomped out with golf cleats. He was hairless, bloody scabby skin and huge crusty leisions. Poor thing barely had any hair at all. He was found running loose in a wooded area and they actually though he may of been set on fire. My vet did a skin scrape and fond him over run with demodex mites.
We used ProMeris on the dog and they brought him back in 2 weeks for a check up and he actually had started to grow hair. Turns out he was an all white Shih Tzu with serious immune problems. If he misses a does of Promeris the mange started up again because they have other dogs in the house and he gets reinfested. But on Promeris the dog looks and feels normal.
We believe he was the product of a puppy miller that heard she was going to be raided so she dumped something like 200 shih tzu's in the woods. While we don't have any real proof, he was found within days of the other dogs that were rescued running wild.
I still see his owners sometimes when i go to the vet's and he's a happy little dog now. They named him Bandit.
While Promeris is not holistic it did clear up this very serious case in 1 treatment. And had Bandit been a normal dog he may have never need another dose. My Vet uses it for a lot of localized mite cases in pups to help them get over this and it also kills fleas and ticks.
