Couldn't say yellowrose--I had a cat in the cabin---and he slept through the whole long....trip. As a matter of fact, slept on through till the next day. I'd have to figure that one out---a lot of conniving, probably. In today's world, and airport security, probably would be virtually impossible to get away with some of the things I did. Flygirl--Did they let you hold the puppy during the flight? It probably wasn't too long a trip to Pitt, or did you take the pup off and drive? I don't know offhand if you can sedate a pup that young, but it worked great with my cat. Gave him the pill an hour before I left for the airport. He woke up on my sister's bed. If a vet told me a low dosage wouldn't hurt the pup, I'd do it in a heartbeat before putting him in cargo.

LOL I had to be smart about what I did because I don't like making other people suffer for what I need to do. I had a diaper bag with plenty of diapers, wipes, a couple bottles and snacks. We flew from Texas to Germany and then, Germany to Cali a year later. I wouldn't have the brass cahonas to put a pup on a flight with a couple hundred people. I knew my kid and how she would react. I knew the airlines and what the meals and drinks would be. I took whatever else I needed myself, to keep her busy and satisfied. I wouldn't be comfortable drugging a pup especially in the air. I'm sure traveling in cargo isn't the most pleasent but they are dogs and they better recover or they are headed back on another flight.

My pups at 8-10 weeks wouldnt fit under a seat so I have to fly cargo and delta is who i use I have flown in and out both ways but i do a lot of socializing the men at the counters in dallas and houston and get them to see how wonderful that baby is and are u gonna see it gets to whereever ? i almost want to go in another large crate just to go along and see them to the other end but I have to turn loose of the strings when i ship them.....hope i never have to live thru a lost dog or an accident but life is a life of lots of chances and u walk by faith and send u dog in the cargo area in his crate with air, a towel to lay on and a drink cup for a sip of water, and no dirty looks or words..

no drugging the pups no doggie Dr. on board . what if ur puppy has a reaction to the chemical u sedated it with ? Its only 8-10 weeks old and u drug it? No No If u imprint ur pups starting at 3 weeks old then shipping in the cargo will not bother them My pups go from Tyler to dallas or Tyler to Galveston at 5 weeks old and go thru noise dogs people streess untill i sell them so they will be acclimated to almost anything. I take them to construction sites where equipment noises are like an airplane taking off so if a pup is imprinted by ur breeder it will fly cargo fine or if u have a no ship policy they should drive out on a vaction like i did to Wisconsin to Fluss Tal 10 years ago and then on to Kentucky, Tennessee with all 9 dogs with me and brought back home a new puppy. I didnt want mine shipped either but Ive grown wiser in my older days and Im not taking anymore road trips for a pup. Im looking at a pup from Veronica Worthington in ALaska and Im sure not going to drive to Alaska to get it I think the Airlines can get it here to Texas!!!!!

Na...yellowrose. I'll take the dirty looks. If I hadn't caused that ruckus in Denver, God only knows what would have happened to my dogs. Some people being annoyed because their flight has been slightly delayed weighed against disaster for my guys. Easy choice for me. You continue to smooch up the airport employees, and put your trust in them. My dogs put their trust in me, and I'm not about to let them down. As to the drug--I said a low dose and only if allowed by a vet. The stress isn't my main concern (although it ranks right up there). My biggest fear is the handling. Walking by faith is all well and good--but I tend to believe faith showed me to take a more "hands on" attitude that would benefit my dogs more.

The only carriers that I find that work as "carry ons" for 8 week old puppies are the "sport bag type" that is made for pets. The jet boxes(crate type) that fit underneath the seat are usually too small for the puppy. If you are flying with the dog you could get the small jet box type(crate) and check the dog in as luggage, and you will get there(hopefully) at the same destination at the same time.

I recently shipped one from MS. to Canada in one of the carry on sports bag and he was no problem at all. In fact I think they let him out of the bag and he held the dog in his lap for a good portion of the trip

Delurking for the first time to offer my experiences, for what they're worth. I've done a bit of research on the same topic lately--I'll be getting my first GSD at the end of the month (yay!) and will need to fly with him from Seattle to Alaska. As others have said, the carrier size limitations for in-cabin pets seemed a little small to me for a large breed puppy. One thing I would keep in mind with carrying on a pet versus having him fly in the cargo hold is that having any pet (let alone a cute little puppy!) with you in the airport is a big attention-grabber. While traveling with cats and small dogs, I have had kids poke fingers in kennels, crowd around so aggressively that the animal has felt threatened, and have even had grown adults who were also traveling with animals jam their pet's face against the side of my carrier so the animals could "be friends". It's amazing. I will be going with Alaska Airlines to fly my puppy home--used them in the past with other large dogs without problem (knock on wood!). They allow one pet in first class and up to five in coach, but also have a pet hold with temperature control. The animals are the last on the plane and first off. I believe they have service to New York, although it looks like the flights are operated by another carrier so that would definitely be something to inquire about. In a perfect world I'd love to carry on my new little guy with me, but as long as there's an itinerary offering good flight connections I almost feel like it's less stress to just have him contained in the cargo hold.

.... I can see this now, my first flight ever and I get a yellowroseoftexas sitting beside me, with my new puppy crammed under my seat in a 1x2 shoebox somewhere over the Atlantic. .... GAWD, I can only hope I don't know a word they say. ..do they have to stay crated? Can't we just hang on to them?
