Fred is correct Show line is a "TYPE" Working line is a "TYPE" these are subgroups of European GSDs which some breeders who are following SV criteria are breeding in US and throughout the world the 2 types were created and the breed split by selective breeding when the Martin brothers were in power in the SV and set about creating their envisioned ideal TYPE of GSD by close inbreeding and line breeding to create a very uniform dog in color and build - today's show line dog. A minority followed their programs with different priorities, thus establishing the working line type which we know today - both have roots in the same dogs in the 60s and 70s - thus you will see VA dogs like Mutz and Marko and Frei in many working line pedigrees. These are NOT "show work mixes" these are pedigrees prior to the split in the breed to two types. The two types are so set genetically, it does not make any more sense to just cross them unless you have a long term breeding plan and will be keeping pups and going back to your own type in the next several generations. Breedings done mixing type are "reinventing the wheel" and generally not going to be stars in either show ring or on the trial field...they can however, push all the marketing buttons for puppy buyers!
