Almost all military dogs are Malinois now, espically in the Navy from what I have seen. More and more cops are going to them also. The reason the military likes them better is becuase they are faster, healthier and lighter so they can parachute with them and things like that. The Mals number one trait thought for the miltiary is that they need the least amount of rest. They are always ready to go. While a cop takes his dog home at night and it may rest and be "normal" in the military dogs are never taken home and they might have to go out mulitple times a day with a couple different handlers. I am not trying to say one is that much better than the other. The Secret Service only uses Malinois.

Also, while that dog was part of the raid it was with a team member on the outside of the building and was deployed with them in case anyone tried to run.

One last thing haha. It is not SEAL Team 6 anymore. It is Naval Special Warfare Development Group or DevGru for short.

some of the reasons i was given for the trend away from the gsd as service roles is shorter working life, more health expensives, harder to find prospects that will complete the training, too expensive for intial purchase, take longer to train, unpractically large.

not a mal guy here i got a gsd cos i wanted a gsd, would have been easier to get a mal but it was not my choice and i do not regret my choice. i don't necessarily think the gsd has gotten worse there are more good ones now than ever just a lot more that should never have been born.

i do not also think that breeders should make their gsd's more mal like to "compete".

people like me will always prefer a gsd because of what it is not how it compares to a mal.

all just my opinion

i personaly perfer to have both. i have a Mali and a german shepherd they both have their + and their - just like any breed. yet are soo different  in my experence my shepherd you build and develop drives with and my malis you have teach them to cap off their drives to think. and it is a fun challange to work with both but in all i love any breed that works for their handler

my other breed is mutts that only work for themselves and i enjoy that too.

and from where I sit - you can't say German Shehperd wthout sayng guide dog !! --

sadly, with the passing of it's founders a couple of years ago - the only guide school in the US that puts out German Shepherd guides exclusively - is in "transition" - but that's another thread for another day..
