Absolutely agree!

I purchased a puppy that looked to have very good pigment at 8 weeks, except for a white spot on her chest, and white toes on the hind feet. Some of the nails were pale, too.

At 5 years old now, she has almost NO saddle, no black on her tail, and several nails are white or light grey.

I was told by several people that the white spots wouldn't matter. I wish I'd been more careful.

A breeder with more than 40 years experience told me you can be sure a puppy will have good pigment as an adult if the nails look like they've been dipped in India ink.

i dont mind a little white , but perfer no white if possible. a little white on the chest  and toes is exceptable, but you can not have any white on the tail , i have seen it from time to time.
look for  really strong pigment as like with the nails , nose and tip of tail have to be black, but i will also say i have seen white nails turn black as they mature, so with a puppy its really only a guess on how the dog will turn out.

I do know that Rose has white GSD in her line (great-grandfather I think).   She has no white, but she is a definite black / blonde (not tan).

Oh well, we do not show so perfection is not needed.  Teeth Smile     Now when the time comes and I get a black.....  I will be picky that she/ he is all black, no white.

Star at 8 weeks....became this....

Sorry, won't let me post another picture or link. Go to page 3 of the 'straightest topline' thread in the Conformation forum to see a picture of her at 1 year. She is even MORE faded now!

My black puppies had white toenails until they were about 4 weeks old and then they all turned black. Also the ones that had a little white on their chests were the biggest boned and most driven ones. One had about 5 white hairs. The girl I kept had a few more but I( am noticing hers are slowly fading out. When I took them in for their vet check I asked the vet if he thought the white had maybe played a part in the ones being bigger boned. He said he didn't know but the old farmers that had black Angus cows believed if they had white in their udder area they were better producers, calved easier and had more milk. I have never had a puppy with white toes and if I did I would make sure never to repeat that breeding. I don't care if they do change, I just don't want that. JMO...............

Puppies in the nest up to 3 or 4 weeks old as often as not have clear or light toenails, but these will normally
darken as they grow.  White toes or marks on the feet of black pups do sometimes fade to nothing, but just
as often they don't - and someone else might know, but I haven't seen any 'tells' on which way that is going
to go.

Trixx:  my very well pigmented male has a 'white' tip to his tail NOW (he's nearly 10) - looks just like he dipped
it in a bucket of whitewash.  He's going a bit grey all over, but this tail tip is something I had never seen before
on any gsd, of whatever age !  Started to go gradually about 2 years ago;  he had a black tip until then. LOL.

My pup (black) was born with a bit of white on her chest, just a few hairs. As she grew, they kind of dispersed, she's 5 months now and I can only find 2 white hairs now!

For a WL, I don't think it matters at all.

Many all blacks will have a white spot, very often it is between the pads so it is rearly noticed, i am not a fan of white markings on the shepherds, and know of the top Kennels that used potash to discuise(sp) the white chest markings when they were not so common in the ring

Nellie, I've seen that trick done;  but it has to be very WELL done to be completely unspottable if you know what
you are looking for ...Devil Smile
