Mosemancr--
Soft, and sometimes loose stools usually accompany holistic food. It's based on the premise that food shouldn't stay in the intestines too long and become toxic. Dogs usually have more bowel movements, also.
This informaton is what my research yielded over 10 years ago. I haven't tried Wellness, but I assume this is why your dog's stools are runny. Personally, I have used Solid Gold for many years. One of my dogs does better on Newman's Own organic Chicken and Rice. Besides dry, I also use the canned food of Solid Gold, and Innova--but, every other day I switch to Newman's canned food (Newman's promotes solid stools).

LMH,
I too am a BIG supporter of Solid Gold products, and use two of them for ALL of my breedings, and HIGHLY recommend them. I am interested, what products of Solid Gold do you use for your females and/or males during breeding, pregnancy, and delivery? I am fond of Razz and Concept-A-Bitch. Well, I'm interested to hear your input,
Krista

I feed one of my dogs Wellness fish and sweet potato - he loves it and does very well on it - but boy does it stink (the food) and his breath is a little stinky (smells like fish) too. Otherwise I think it's a very good food, quality ingredients, and I recommend it. The rest of my dogs are on Chicken Soup, which for the much lower price is IMO an equally quality food - and the rest of my dogs are doing great on it. They like it and all coats look super on it.

Hi Krista--
I'm not a breeder. Wish I could offer you some advice, but alas, could never part with the puppies. Many years ago, I saw a TV show discussing dog food and a scientific study done on the nutritional values of all brands. Of the 10 best rated, not one was sold here in NY. So the search began for me---after much investigation on my part, I decided Solid Gold was the one for me---but getting it was a nightmare. Today, Solid Gold is readily available. My main staple is Hund-n-Flocken Adult, Lamb, Turkey, and Chicken Canned. Occasionally, the Green Cow Tripe---but, I have a heart attack everytime I open a can, and run from the dogs. I also use Seameal Powder. SG is truly an excellent product.
I do have one boy that didn't do well on Solid Gold Dry. First tried WolfCub Puppy---forget it--runs. Same with Hund-n-Flocken. But when I add Solid Gold Canned to Newman's Organic adult dry--no problem. But, I do have to alternate with Newman's canned.
Try Newman's---even just a couple of cans. I think you'll be surprised. It's also excellent.
From my experience, each dog is different. I don't mind finding out what works best for each one--it's a luxury that a kennel doesn't have.
Krista--did you get your GSD puppy yet? I had gone to the website of your breeder and observed 2 litters. Funny, the only other breed I owned over the years was a Golden. Sam--he was my angel and lived for 12 years. Be prepared Krista, the GSD is not a Golden.

We feed raw most of the time.I sell Natura products, have never had luck with there puppy food always had runny bowls. We like Evo seems to do fine for our Adults, coats, weight, seem to hold steady.. Fromm puppy (gold), the pups do good on it.
I believe it is where the protein comes from, its the calories i worry about the most.
But raw seems to be the best for our shepherds..
Well thats my penny's worth.

Hi LMH and Eichenluft,
Glad to hear from two more dedicated Wellness and Solid Gold users! Personally, I don't feed the food, just the supplements. Concept-A-Bitch (Solid Gold) is exactly what its called, it helps with conception, and Razz (Solid Gold) is similar to Razzberry tea leaves, except its made just for dogs, and that aids in pregnancy and delivery. On Concept-A-Bitch I had a litter of 14! 13 lived, and they were all happy and health (Sorry I should specify, Golden Retrievers) and I have had several of my females on Razz for the pregnancy, and delivery, and have NEVER had to have one C-Section (Knock on wood) and the breach births always turned out fine. I have never tried the Wellness food, but swear by the WellTabs (Wellness), those are very nice, love what they do for my dogs, give them energy, EXCELLENT coats, and I swear the dogs just shine like the sun, both externally, and their moods! (No, I don't sell or get paid for marketing Solid Gold or Wellness) Though by the way I sing their praises I should! If anybody's intersted, they have GREAT prices for Wellness and Solid Gold supplements and foods on www.jefferspet.com or www.jbwholesale.com

I have been using Wellness for almost 6 yrs now. I have 4 adults on it, Fish for a male who had cronic ear infections, since he was little he is now goingto be 6, then i feed one chicken and one female lamb. The male gets 2 1/2 cups twice daily. the females get 2 cups twice daily. When i am training them we go down to 1 1/2 cups to slim down if too fat
I have my female from Germany still on RC GSD 24 she came to me on that so i left her on that... i much prefer Wellness but i cannot afford to feed all the dogs Wellness and no need to switch her anyway... she has beautiful coat and all is good. RC i am on the breeders program and cut my UPC
I always use babydog30 for puppies til 4 - 5 months then we go to Wellness puppy and move onto Wellness adult... thats what my puppy buyers all do.. they do have the option to feed RC GSD24 tho so they would go to puppy 32 after babydog and then yr old do adult...
All my adults and show dogs get Wellness Super 5 powder supplement to avoid TGS, thats the only reason i give it...
Wellness is top self IMO. I give puppy packages that they send me from Wellness and i also get something from RC for puppy homes too. From time to time you can call Wellness and ask for coupons....

Meissa-
I saw your post and thought I might explain also why I chose to give my youngest male Newman"s Own Organic Chicken and Rice (adult formula). The food has a single source of protein--Bell& Evans organic chicken. This is the dry food. There is *no fruit* added. When fruit is added an abundant amount of sugar is produced, and when combined with meat, produces gas and poor digestion---leading to diarrhea. Some dogs tolerate fruit very well. My boy doesn't. As a matter of fact, he will never eat fruit, no matter what is offered to him. Raw vegetables, he dies for---fruit, turns away from.
Molly feeds her dog the fish and sweet potato from Wellness. I believe that variety doesn't contain fruit either. If you want to continue with Wellness, this might be a good alternative choice.
The organic grains have beneficial fiber that increases bowel movements (annoying, yes), but this does keep the intestines healthier. Try and keep Ben on the holistic, if possible. Jdh is correct in that organic foods are very rich in nutrients. They are very concentrated, with no fillers to harden stools. You may have to feed less. Too much, the diet becomes stressful to the intestines and the outcome is loose stools. (This is also why Newman's was a good choice for Joe--21% protein--I could feed more, satisfying him. But, I also add the canned food, and give a medium raw egg daily which adds protein. Ends up a good solution for him.)
Whatever you decide, I hope you find a remedy soon. Good luck.
