I love a nice low zw...but look at dogs w/very low zw's and low and behold.............<gasp>there are dogs w/fast normal hips in the ped!

I don't want to post anyone else's dog for critique, so I'll post one of mine. The only zw rated dog I still have is Capri. Here she is: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=578580

N
ow, she has a maternal grandsire, (Metin) w/fast normal hips. If you say that's the equivalent to fair (this argument seems to be one that can never be settled), then how can you say you should pass on a dog w/a fair grandparent if that's all that's in that ped? She also has a great grandma on her sire side (Angie) who was fast normal. Last I checked, her zw was a 70. I think that's a pretty decent score.

My point is that to say only dogs with certain tests or certain ratings should be considered is really narrow-minded and shortsighted and will get you in trouble. There is a lot more to it than that.

LOL. Well, answer me then! PUhleeeeeze??? Haha

How can one get caught up in a dog having one or two "less than desired" hip ratings back in a pedigree.  The entire dog/pedigree needs to be taken in consideration. I find it very difficult and confusing to find that many dogs will receive one hip score in one country only to have the same hips rated entirely different in another country.

Jillsue, thank you. Now I know I'm not totally crazy...or at least I'm not the only one who's totally crazy. I anxiously await an explanation.

I have been given the title "crazy" a few times:)  Sometime by others.....other times I think that I just might be.  Who in their "right" mind would put as much time and effort into something that cannot be guaranteed to succeed . The dog world is very complex to say the least.  Dog breeding can be very rewarding...............or it can be the exact opposite. I always try to do "right" by the dog.   Until all countries use the same grading system, all people involved in the grading process see every hip film the same way, etc. we can only continue to use the knowledge available to us to make the best decisions.

fair still equals no sign of HD. there are lots of other things I would consider before this worried me.

Just talking about hips here....

If I was looking at 2 pups sired by 2 different males... one male was FAIR but was a GOOD to EXCELLENT hip producer... the other male was EXCELLENT but produced FAIRs or worse on the hips.
I would go with the first one!! No questions asked!!!

With that being said and as mentioned by others here, as far as hips/elbows go we need to look at the "whole picture" not just one dog. Not every dog is going to have excellent hips. Remember FAIR is still a NORMAL HIP.

Sorry, had to run out, Happy New Year!! That is the thing about the ZW=Zuchwert, you can even have bad ratings, but you still get what the whole pedigree is producing; yes, other things should be consider. Jenni, you r not crazy ;-)
