Brittany, please don't do this. I asked a question for a friend of mine, if you have no imput to help us, please don't make this thread spin out of control like it always does.
Many breeders AI their own dogs. I don't think anyone would look down upon or turn someone in for doing this. I don't know of any laws in the US prohibiting this. Bestiality is completely different.
blueskyekennels, excuse me but I simply asked for somebodys views that is RELATED to what you are seeking for. I think I have the right to ask without being accused of creating a riot here on this forum.
I do not consider it to be animal cruelty and Bestiality to ejaculate ones own dog for health of the dogs reproduction and if thats the cause then each vet that does it is guilty of this crime. I do not think breeding dogs should require vet assistance (Dogs can mate without human assistance) with the ONLY consideration to check to see if the female has brucellosis and if shes ready to be bred including storing away frozen semen.
Brittany AKA Britannia, as in "encyplopedia" says: (Dogs can mate without human assistance) with the ONLY consideration to check to see if the female has brucellosis and if shes ready to be bred including storing away frozen semen
If you think all dogs can mate without assistance- obviously you have never bred.
The ONLY consideration is to make sure the female does not have brucellosis? You are real far from the mark here. There are many more considerations to look at. And lastly - storing away frozen semen??? Exactly how would you accomplish that in a female Brittany??
I would eliminate an infection as being the cause. Some infections will cause a low sperm count. Have your vet check for infection. If he's infected, some Baytril may bring him back.
From what I have read on the subject, it appears stress can be a major factor also.
There are many claims that various drugs, vitamins, herbs, will enhance sperm production, you will just have to try them for yourself, let us know how they work.
If the above is eliminated the search for the problem gets more involved and a fertility specialist can guide you from there. Soft testicles are a concern.
Changing subjects slightly:
There's a question about frequency and overuse.
Aparrantly it takes 90 days for a sperm to mature. So how many times can a male breed before his potency is reduced to the level that it affects his ability to impregnate a female? No vet has an answer for this one, there are many variables.
I have to wonder if a male that's bred 12 times in a month is as potent with the last female as he was with the first.
Hi All,
Well, to answer the question of infection, nope the dog is clean...completely, no infection, and non of the females he's tried to breed have had Brucellosis. He has been tested, as have the females, nothing. Is it a hereditary thing, a male having low sperm cell count? Or a male having a high count? My male's count and motility is off the charts, based on the opinion of TWO veterinary repo specialists, so I am satisfied, and he's always produced some HUGE litters. Either way, my friend is armed to the teeth with all this wonderful information, and suggestions, so she will probably set up an appointment soon. I know she is going to another repo specialist simply because of the sake of a second opinion, so I'll let you guys know the outcome, Thanks so much for all of your help and many suggestions,
Krista
Brittany,
Sorry, I miss read your post, I didn't mean to accuse you, and knowing that you were actually asking a question, I am very sorry for "jumping the gun". Sorry again,

1. Storing away frozen semen from a very good producing male could help a female to produce better quality puppies in the future (Can you imagine if their were still semen available from Jeck??) If Germany wasn't't so strict... and would allow frozen semen with the requirements of DNA from both parents.. I'm sure we would be having better quality dogs in the ring. If you go back and see what the dogs look like then and now.. you would cry. go to
http://showcase.netins.net/web/royalair/pasttopresent.htm
to see :)
2. When I meant by "Dogs can mate without human assistance" I mean that you should not have to take your dog to a vets office to have a natural breeding.. I think it's a total waste of money. I also have strong opinions about AI.. I feel that the only time AI should be done is if the Male is from out of states or if the sire has been dead for a long time and that his semen is frozen.
3. You're RIGHT! I've never bred before... why you may ask? Because I'm educating myself (As I will keep saying this) and learning the goods and the bads and to learn the genetics of the breed. My goal for breeding "is" to improve the breed. I will only deal with those who's willing to help me to improve the breed by working with my future puppies.
that is alright Krista... no hard feelings :)
Brittany,
You're really maturing, you know that? You are deffinetly improving, and admitting one's faults, for example
"You're RIGHT! I've never bred before... why you may ask? Because I'm educating myself (As I will keep saying this) and learning the goods and the bads and to learn the genetics of the breed. That takes some major courage, and frankly, if you keep this up, people may come around, and see that you are changing, and by being humble, like you are doing here, you'll learn a LOT more information, then you would if you were the old Brittany. As the saying goes, "You'll attract more bee's with Honey than you will with vinegar."
KEEP IT UP! :)
