Anything can cause an allergy it's just more likely the corn. There are several foods that are corn free and grain free, i don't know any of the names but there have been severl threads on it, just go to the search website link and type in grain free or corn free food, it should bring up those threads and they will be packed with the names of different foods that fit your bill.

I use Fromms Gold, but even that has Flax, not usually an allergen. Costco sells a grain free dog food that is reported to be very good, comparitively inexpensive.

Before you get into meds try this:
Wipe your dog's ears with sensitive baby wipes, spray some hydrocortisone into them (available even in grocery stores in pet section). On the beginning do it every day until the irritation/redness goes away. Your dog should stop scratching its ears within a day or two. You should see a big improvement within a week. Then it’s just maintenance – once a week, once every other week depending on outdoor conditions. I have a construction going on and a lot of dust and it seems that my dog’s ears get dirty every day.
From my experience and after a year of medicating my dog I realized that the recurring ear infections in my dog are caused by her simply scratching her ear. The dirt, bacteria and fungus from her dirty claws would infect her scratched ears. By preventing her from scratching I stopped ear infections. It’s been 5 years now and not a single one and I’m still on my first bottle of hydrocortisone... And there is no comparison between what I paid for this bottle and a year of visit at the vets and vet’s medicine that really didn’t solve anything... It so easy for a vet to say that it's allergy... If you believe it - you will start getting into really big expenses...
Of course the allergy can be a reason, but why not to check a simple home remedy first and see if what's vet saying is true?

They Zymox with Hydrocortisone also has enzymes that clear the wax and keep the ph of the ear normalized so that no yeast can grow.
