I wouldn't recommend any kind of injection for shedding. I have a male who has a very thick coat and when he begins shedding I don't even attempt to brush him. I load him up and bring him to the groomer - she blows him out with a high pressure blower to get the loose hair out, then baths him and does the process again and its cuts back on the shedding ALOT! You can also try to put your dog on a high quality diet and give supplements (cod liver oil, fish oil, eggs, etc.) this will keep the coat healthy (soft and shinny)

Good posts all. More outdoor time is healthier for the dog anyway.

German shepherds shed alot, that's normal. I just swept up enough hair to build a new puppy! and that is only 2 days. Mine are brushed frequently. Prasac, This in NORMAL, I would never consider injections for this even if I was aware of any.

This IS one of the times of year that shedding is at it's worst. Most of mine are loosing their coat. Flax oil is also good along with the fish oil. None of the injections are guaranteed. I would not use them as some are steriods and the are bad for anybody including dogs. I would also be sure you do not bathe too often. This can also dry out the skin and coat and cause more shedding. I would say a good rule of thumb is no more than once a month, unless there is a problem that calls for it to be more often. Once or twice a year is not uncommon either. Brushing is the key. Debby

I certainly would not Inject !!!! stick with good diet and good grooming habits, don't bathe too much as earlier mentioned. Get used to it, GSD's shed, They are supposed to!

prasac, I would like to add one more comment. You do not say how old your dog is, but, if the dog has a thyroid problem, loss of hair can be a result. Usually dogs are 4 or more before thyroid issues arise and hair loss can be a sign of thyroid trouble. And that hair loss is often symetrical on both sides just behind the shoulders. But if the dog is young, is getting good nutrition, and the shedding is normal shedding, well, it is something that GSDs do. As for bathing, I bathe my gSDs once a year, IF they are shown. Otherwise, there is no need to bathe them unless they get into something they should not. If the dog is healthy, the coat should be very glossy, not dry or brittle. Good luck.

I bought a Furminator. It's very good for removing deade undercoat, but you need to be careful and not be too vigorous when using it or you may end up with a dog that looks shaved instead of brushed. I think the person who formulates a safe supplement to reduce the shedding of a GSD will quickly become a millionaire. I know I'd buy the product LOL.

Forgot to mention that Petsmart sometimes has those sticky tape rollers on sale for just a few dollars each. I just bought a dozen of them and only have one dog but he has free run of the house and is allowed on the bed and one sofa. I even found a mini roller to carry in my purse.

LOL I remember going to an outdoor show a few years ago and finding the GSDs by following backtracking the snowdrifts of hair in the parking lot
