Wow, thank you for the help folks! I called CBSA at Buffalo/Ft. Erie just a few minutes ago and spoke to a gruff sounding guy, and he barked the following questions to me:

1) What kind of dog is it?
2) where is he coming form?
3) What is his age?
4) How much did you pay for him?

After I answered each of these questions, he asked me "Are you going to breed this dog?", I answered "No." Then he asked me if I was going to sell the puppy within the next year? I answered "No", and he asked if the dog was going to be my pet, I answered in the affirmative and he said "well then, we won't charge you any tax, but be aware we may charge you for an inspection".

Any input here? Also, since the puppy is less than 3 months old, vaccination papers are not required.

Best,
Alan

June, 2010 we brought 2 pups in from Slovokia into the Metropiltan Detroit Airport.  Fortunately, I researched the process on the GSD Pedigree Database before shipping date.  I followed the advice of others and used the broker that Hans recommended.  It cost approximately $100 or thereabouts and the process went without a hitch.  At the same time, there was a woman from Ohio who also brought in 2 Czech dogs and she also used the same broker as myself.  There was a 3rd party at the freight site, who brought in a Dobe pup from Italy.  He DID NOT use a broker to save the extra $.  Both myself and the lady from Ohio  had are respective dogs in our vehicles and on our way, while the 3rd party had to leave his pup and go to Customs to get the paperwork straightened out.  In my opinion, if you want to avoid complications then use a broker.

By the way, since the 1970's I have shipped dogs numerous times  all across the country and into Canada.  My experience above has proven to be my best by far.

Oh - the broker was Jean Duncan.

Hope this info helps.

Hi there Cassandra,

Thanks for the info! It cost $100? Hans as in Alpine K9's Hans?

The info they gave you on no health certificate i believe is incorrect.
You dont need the rabies vaccine BUT you do need a health certificate in the country of origin stating the dog is healthy and any vaccines that it has had.

But yes a broker would ease the issue if you went that way.

I would check that part out before the pup leaves Germany.

gsdlvr4life you have been tremendously helpful. I didn't make it clear, they did want a health cert., but proof of vaccination was not necessary. So a broker would be a good  idea eh? OK, great!

Hi:

Oops - I lied  -  after checking my records it was $180 BUT that was for 2 pups split w/another person who was taking one of the pups.  Yes - Hans from Alpine K9 made the recommendation on a thead discussing brokers.

Again - considering the value of the animal, the stress of the long flight to North America, and our desire to get the puppies settled in to their new homes w/out complications - the $ spent on a broker was WELL worth it.  I can guarantee that this would be the only way I would ever ship and I have had decades of shipping dogs.

The broker we used was Jean Duncan.
