THE head butcher and co ordinator for one of our largest Distribution centers of meat in East Texas has had dogs for 40plus years, and has a female of mine. HE butchers his own beef, BLACK angus and deer he hunts and has fed raw and kept me in meat for several years...finest meat any dog would want.
Only religious beliefs would be the only reason not to feed. raw...OF course any human with common sense knows to make sure meat is fresh , handle it properly , freeze it and feed in an appropriate time..BUT dogs have an entirely different digestive make up and a completely different metabolism for digestion..
THE gsd is one of the most like in the WILD , if you ease them back into it..After all, our dogs are raised in civilization and must have raw introduced from baby pup and on into adult hood.
Adult dogs never having raw need to be introduced in small quantity., like any new food.

Nan, your response about Safeguard worried me, so I looked up their website, according to their website, it DOES still treat Hook, Whip, Round and Tapeworms.
http://www.safe-guard-for-dogs.com/safeguard-dewormer.asp
I always deworm at least twice, and being as I got my new boy on March 18th, come the 3-5th of April he will recieve his second dose of SafeGuard. I am taking him in on April 3rd for a general wellness exam, including shots and fecal so that should give me a pretty good idea what I need to do from there. Being as he has only been dewormed with the Safeguard once (for the three day treatment) I expect he'll need another dose.
YellowRose, thank you for your response. I am very glad to hear I don't need to worry about the Pork. I probably won't feed raw completely, but I have no qualms about using it on the side with the Taste of the Wild.
My kids' veterinarian feeds her dogs raw herself, and also uses TOTW on the side. She has to be one of the only vets I've ever known who actually didn't believe into the whole Hills Science Diet hype they push in vet school for endorsements.

trichinosis is caused by the nematode trichinella spiralis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinella_spiralis
I think it says from 1999-2001 there were 12 documented cases in the US. Not sure I have that right....it's at the bottom of the article.
I have been a Medical Technologist in parasitology for about 30 years and I have never seen a case.

Great to hear it's rare. Either way, to keep the meat on the bones fresh, the bones are in my freezer.
The price was pretty decent considering the amount that I got and now knowing that pork is alright, I'll probably just keep buying it for the kids. The puppy also gets a raw egg in his kibble every morning too, and that's something I've done since I picked him up on March 18th.
Thanks again for the insite everyone, it is appreciated!

I do not feed store bought eggs to my dogs nor do I eat them..I buy 7 dozen fresh brown on the ground beautiful eggs from a lady in Jacksonville. We eat lots of eggs in recipes and scrambled, omlets, meringue on pies, etc so they go fast and the dogs get one in their dry dog food also..
I have a dog owner of my male Rito whose sister works in one of the biggest chicken houses in Texas and she will never eat another store bought egg in her life..
I didn't ask for the details..nor do I want to know..I took her word.
SO find you a local person with YARD eggs.

An old post from sueincc perfectly sums up my thoughts on feeding raw pork. Basically, I don't care if I'm being irrational- it's about what I feel comfortable feeding.

I'm a raw whole bones feeder. I used to feed pork necks on a regular basis but stopped after I read about pseudo rabies. There is probably less than a snowballs chance in hell that my dogs would come in contact with pork infected with PRV virus, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. Everyone draws their own line in the sand as to what they will and won't feed. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_health/animal_diseases/pseudorabies/downloads/pseudorabies_faq.pdf |
