Ok, just got her results from yesterday and she has moved up to a whopping 0.9ng...I am having another test run on Tuesday..She is being flirty but the 2 males I have here are only slightly interested.

I ran into this on my bitches last heat. She took until day 21 to be ready. She is usually ready on day 12 or so. Exactly what blackthorn said. The level can go up or down until it reaches 2.0. Then plan to breed five days after that. Although my bitch did not follow that rule of thumb. She took her time getting there, but did get pregnant when she was bred at 5.

Mirasmom,

Are you saying 18 as in 18.0 or 1.8? There can only be one way to read/understand the progesterone levels correct? My Ana was at 10.4, (test administered on a Saturday, result told to me on Sunday) I attempted and even attempted to assist but Ana wanted no part! And this most loving GSD was trying to tear the ole boy, Reiker's head off! So I interpreted that 10.4 was end/out of heat?

I have had more than one time females not be ready until 21 days. All times we ended up with nice big beautiful healthy litters. Be patient and don't go broke on all those progesterone test!! I hate that!! Keep up the good work hopefully you will get there and have a successful breeding!

I have learned more about progesterone tests in the past year than in the past 10 years.

When I rung my vet for a result for my girl last September he simply said " its too late you have missed her " so me crying, rung the stud owner and told her the result was 38 nmol/ and that we had missed her. " stud owner said " No way bring her early tomorrow " so by then she would have been far to high I thought but no we had a good mating and come December she delivered 8 lovely puppies all fine.

My vet always told me when it is 10nmol/ take her to the stud.

Don't always trust the vet.

The eggs can be fertile for quite a few days (around 5 days) after ovulation, and the progesterone levels keep rising after it crosses 2. So having her get pregnant when the level is at 38 isn't surprising. It just depends how long after ovulation it was.

I think normal levels for a female who is pregnant are around 40 to 60, although I'd have to double-check to be sure.

dogshome9,

How many out of your 8 were males?  Curious as a common theory is that male sperm swim faster and female sperm last longer.  Therefore if correct, being at the end of the fertile period yours should have had mostly males as the male sperm would have arrived first and fertilized the eggs that were waiting.

I am about to blow that theory away she delivered 2 males & 6 females.

This female had a previous litter >> mated 2 days past 12 nmol/ she delivered 9 male puppies.

I was stunned >> just kept on waiting for a female but non arrived.

Boy were they a handful at 6 weeks >>> only litter I have ever had that I was pleased when they left. I was covered in bites and bruises, didn't have a pair of jeans that were not torn.laughlaugh

But they were fun.

Yay!! Vet called this morning, yesterday she was at 3.5, he thinks she should ovulate today. I am going for another test tomorrow to make sure she hit 5.0. Today is day 16 for her so breeding should take place Friday which is day 18, she is really teaching me a lesson ;-)  Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me!! I will update everyone when I know if we have pups on the way!!
