This has happened to me . I had a female shipped here from Hungary  a year ago and she had a pup that had that. Also again some years back with a different dog ..Vets did not seem to know what happened.Very sad ..I kept the healthy pups. They are all grown up and doing well,I would limit the registration.Best of luck !!

There is always a possibility that the bitch was exposed to something toxic;  herascide, pestaside (forgive my sp) of even ate something toxic; flea stuff, worming med's, toxic plants, grasses, dirt, manure, etc.  the list can go on and on.  All of the above can cause birth defects if it is not dwarfism;  I am not familiar with swimmers;  so cannot comment on that.  Again so sorry, mother nature can be such a bitch.  Nan

PS:  My friend had some birth defects when she used to feed Purina.??  We were all suspicious at that time which was about 10 years ago;  she raised Rottiweilers.  A million reasons why crap happens.  N

Are there unaffected males? Any heavy linebreeding in the litter?

SO SORRY. GET THE BABIES TO THE VET ASAP. HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR THEM.

One of the boys died last night and one this morning before vet opened.
She was here with me throughout her whole pregnancy so I know she was not exposed to anything toxic.

Yes there were three unaffected males and one female.  They are all doing just fine.

The deformed boys would not eat and cried all the time so there was more going on with them than just their feet turned under and out.

The others are doing well, no problems.

The only thing I can think of that might have caused this problem is when she first got pregnant I had a very hard time getting her to eat anything the first three weeks.  Food that she would normally eat she refused.  Up until the last two weeks of her pregnancy she completely refused all kibble.  I was feeding her raw or cooking her meals.  But the first three weeks she even refused raw and cooked meals.  She would eat very little so maybe malnourished because mama would not eat.  Otherwise, it is just nature.

No heavy linebreeding 5-5 on Troll, that's it.

Not a nice thing to happen for the Pups and you. but i think it best they went quickly, they would never have a good quality life if they were born that way it was more than the legs it seems, Hope all goes well with the other Pups

Thank you all for your help and good wishes.
The other puppies are doing very well and are beautiful.
I agree it's best they went quick, there was more than feet wrong with them.

Sad stuff just happens sometimes.
My daughter took on the job of 3 orphaned kittens about 13 days ago. At first there were 3, one was already fly blown and had maggots comingout of small wounds and all other orifices, we euthanized. Another one (white) was a failure to thrive after 5 days, no weight gain, loss of activity, euthanaized. The 3rd is a big, fat, healthy gray kitten, whom she has bottle fed and looks like it is going to do well, 14 days on Thursday. So stuff just happens sometimes. It is Mother Nature after all.....
We had a litter of Labs come in last year to our vet clinic, bitch only had 3 puppies, older bitch, 2 of the puppies had congenital front limb deformities. They were able to get around, but the legs did not grow to meet the needs of the big Lab bodies. He kept them and ended up euthanizing both of them by the time they were a year old due to break down of the front legs and pain.

 Owner edit
Unfortunately DURING PREGNANCY your vet is RIGHT.   (not that he knows why probably)

Let me first remark MY vet feeds her dogs RAW.

But, during pregnancy you MUST have them on a good quality kibble because the pups NEED the correct calcium phosphorous ratios 1:1
Dam needs to have enough of an exact diet to have enough natural oxytocin for delivery.

I have fed raw and ignored it and lost 6 pups due to raw feeding during pregnancy over the two females which were exclusively fed raw.   I was devastated because i so very much believe in raw feeding.

So now i feed kibble during pregnancy WITH PREVENTION PLUS by Joshua Kennels and IMMEDIATELY SWITCH the dams over once whelped to true pure raw green tripe, raw chicken, horse meat etc and a performance mix for their recovery.   I can't take that chance again.

The pups too  are raised on the same mix as their dams starting at 3 weeks and the results are amazing.  But with pregnant females, never again...

( I do give the dams a mid day 'snack' of raw )

Best of luck with your dogs' pregnancy and delivery!

then i saw the date of the post and did a search on your further postings.  and noticed this post.

This deformity is the result of the raw feeding -

I m sorry I don't visit here much any more but I doubt you would have taken my advice over the other posters.
