My experience mirrored Sheperd Woman's above of adopting a puppy from the shelter, seemingly full of life and robust until that evening and into the next day. I called the shelter immediately and explained. They told me to please get the puppy to the vet asap and let them know what transpired. Well, it was definitely PARVO and the vet told us the puppy would probably not survive the $600 treatment to try to save him so he was put to rest. The shelter was notified that he was positive for PARVO and they had already called the various families of the siblings of the puppy that had been adopted out. Our shelter did refund us the money but said that's not normally the policy.
A rather interesting note on this was that one of the ladies that adopted his sibling was able to save him herself using Pepto Bismal and constant hydration.
We bleached the yard, lymed the yard and did everything the vet told us to do. Our adult dogs had been given boosters immediately upon the findings of Parvo. Within two years we had a litter of puppies and never had an issue with this again. Lucky perhaps.
