Raw is best IMHO but Origen - any of them - is THE best!  Regular, red bites, fish.  You will feed much less quantity so figure that into your calculations.

Origen makes Acana as well that is a bit cheaper, still very reliably made and now widely available in stores in Vermont.

TOTW used to outsource some of their ingredients and there was some issue with them back aways but my memory isn't good on this.  Origen buys local, fresh.
Savings on the long term.

I agree raw is best but Acana or Orijen are the best of the best kibbles.

TOTW is the best no-grain food for the price - it's far cheaper than Orijen and is a very good food so comparitively (price and quality) you really can't beat it.  My dogs have done very well on it for several years now.

I've heard good things about Orijen, Acana, Blue Buffalo, WolfPac and California Natural as well as Innova. Innova IMO is too rich for many dogs - my dogs got the squirts on it when I tried some.  And the Innova EVO is WAYYYYY too  high in protein for dogs IMO.

Yes it is possible to buy wholesale.  I have a retail permit in addition to my business and Kennel License. It is simple to maintain a small storefront with any Kennel license. I am then able to buy larger quantities for about 10.00 less per bag. Also damaged bags in the warehouse are typically an additional 25% off of the whole sale price and available to customers with proper license for private use and not resale. Orders come in several times a week. Bags that are damaged are ones that did not arrive damaged. They may have gotten a hole in the bag being pulled off a pallet or while being re stocked. They are immediately taped up and are an excellent source to purchase if you have the ability. I have fed Pinnacle for a number of years but recently switched to Orijen as well as Acana. Other foods I like are Go! Wellness Core and Nature's Variety "Instinct"

Acana should not be overlooked as a lessor product line for Champion the makers of Orijen.  It is lessor protein by 10 to 20% but does have nice levels of additional fruits and vegetables you do not get in Orijen. Most expensive does not always mean a food is best for your dog. Many GSD's will actually do better on Acana as a maintenance diet then Orijen. Acana will be about 10.00 less per bag than Orijen and also has a new product to their line called Ranchlands. It is a Beef, Bison and Lamb formula.

For those that ever have issues putting weight on a GSD or maintaining weight. Go! Made by Petcurean is an excellent High Kcal Grainfree food for active dogs.  For very Allergy sensitive dogs with digestive issues Simply Natural is an excellent first option. It contains Duck Potatoes and essential oils, vitamins and minerals. The very basics in the products out there offering a Duck and Potato recipe.

I keep trying Blue Buffalo and not being thrilled with it.

I fed ToTW for about a year and all my dogs did very well on it--a noticeable improvement over the Healthwise (made by Natura) that I had been feeding--coats looked better and felt softer, condition improved, etc.

I recently started everybody on Earthborn grain-free and am very pleased with it--I have to buy it online, but it seems to be on sale right now (an introductory promotion?) so that even with shipping it's less expensive than ToTW. (Especially when I factor in the 20-40 mile roundtrip to go get dog food from the store.)

I have long thought that Orijen was top of the line, but this discussion of the high amount of salt and the imbalance of a few other nutrients has me wondering: http://desertwindhounds.blogspot.com/2010/11/look-at-orijen-adult-food-or-why-i.html

We use the Earthborn Grain Free Primitive, and are very pleased with it.
I really like the EVO products....but I also need a food that is ALS, so that I can feed it to the puppies.  The Earthborn has normal calcium ratios suited for the puppies...plus...it has a higher calorie count than TOTW, besides it being extremely cost efficient for a Grain Free food.
If EVO made an ALS suitable for puppies.....I would use it exclusively.
We use both EVO & Earthborn at the moment...and I am pleased with both.
