ACE- a false/positive hit on dope = no one dies. Dogs can and are cross trained on certain substances. But never Explosives.
If a dog alerts on dope, airports/terminals/etc. do not get shut down and people evacuated.
A professionally trained EDD has to be hard core best of the best, 1 substance (Explosive) only.
You cannot train a detection dog to tell you that he/she has alerted on dope or explosives, so you would have to treat every "alert" as if it were explosives.

Most dogs trained in Narc are trained to do" aggressive indication" dig when they find narcotics
Dog that are trained for "bomb"detection are trained in passive indication ...sit as an alert
As you would NOT want a dog digging at a bomb.
Dual purpose is dog trained to do narc/protection ....bomb/pertection
Not all dept. have a need for dual purpose dog so if just want a Narc or Bomb dog most departments would go with a Lab and GSD or Mal are used for dual purpose.

Many dogs are only suited to doing one job/purpose. The drive of a dog usually makes the difference if it is dual or single purpose. My dog is a dual purpose GSD. He is certified in two main areas of work, patrol and narcotics. In patrol there are "sub-disciplines" of tracking, obedience, and apprehension. Narcotics is just the search for narcotics. The other post is right, narcotics and explosive cross training is a practical and legal no-no. Other dogs we have are single purpose, they only have one job such as only narcotics, explosives, tracking/trailing, and so on. Depending on the needs of the agency you may only want one or the other. We have a school narcotics dog, it's a single purpose (no need in it bitting anyone), most of the other dogs we have are dual purpose dogs used on patrol.
