True Sporty, a lot depends on the individual dog.  But, certain breeds do have characteristics which make them better suited for family protectors.

I'm a GSD man, but honestly an animal lover. The BEST in my eyes is only one. The best quaterback, etc. Not great quaterbacks, but THE BEST!. Even though I'm a GSD man I wouldn't say they are the best "Family protection". They are great and maybe the majority of the breed is at the top. My Chow Chows were unbelievable. And I didn't hesitate to show people how wrong they were about that breed for whatever reason(s). Sometimes I think or wonder if it's me? Or if it's the dog itself? Or just the bond. Or a combination of all of the above.

I've been blessed throughout life with great dogs but it's how I view them. Down the road when I journey into town or make a run to Lowes there's a house on the edge of town with two yellow labs. They're older dogs and they're in a small kennel, patio blocks for the floor, with a little dog house. ALWAYS, ALWAYS in that kennel, I haave never see them out. Now I don't know what happens 24/7/365 but I'm past there enough to see that I have never seen them out of their CAGE. It got to the point where I almost knocked on the door and was going to ask them if they wanted to give them up to me. Just so they could live a better life. But who knows what happens when you're not looking? Just kills me. Every dog I had, every breed did exactly what I wanted or needed. I love GSds and will be particular to that breed for life but for me to HONESTLY without doubt say that they are the BEST, I can't. JMO.

I THINK MOST CRIMINALS RECOGNIZE THE GERMAN SHEPHERD A  ''POLICE DOG'' THEREFORE ADDING TO THE DETERRENT FACTOR. IF YOU HAD A CHOICE OF BEING DETAINED BY A GERMAN SHEPHERD OR SAY A LABORADOR , WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER ENCOUNTER? NUFF SAID HERE!

in a household where there were small children, gsd would be my first choice.  other breeds i would consider if the children were a little older might be bouvier, dutch & mali.  personal preference only.

Ziegenfarm. I think you hit it on the nail head. I would not place a Bouvier in a family with a baby that is crawling unless they were experienced dog persons and understoood the breed. Not that the Bouvier puppy is any worse then the GSD but they grow so fast can be hard to manage while teething and mouthing as puppies and within a few months can hurt a small child even while playing without meaning to do it. People see my Sully who is a very large male all the time becuase he has been trained to be my physical assist dog. All they see is a big gentle teddy bear who happens to also be very pretty. He is very gentle whith small kids and we are going to hospitals all the time and that in itself is work sometimes. What they do not see is the hours and hours of work that went into training him to be that big teddy bear. He could very easily have turned out to be just another Bouvier if he had not been worked with.

Still think the best protection is a dog breed call Glock or S W or even a Colt. Always dependable and can reach out and touch the bad guys

The rare breeds are rare for reason. Most popular and most recognised breeds are such for a reason. GSD is worldwide most popular and most recognized breed. There is a reason for that.

lovejags,

I rather be detained by the gsd in your avatar than the labrador. In otherwords, I would select to fear the labrador more than your american gsd.
