missfly.....You have made a very good post IMO.....There is no magic number. For everyone it would be different depending on their ability to care for the animals......: )

Hoard to me, means a supply that is collected for future use. I like the term Collector. A car collector buys cars and stores them in a garage and doesn't do a damn thing with them. Maybe on a nice sunny day, he'll take one out and go for a spin, but mainly it is merely to own. The dog collector is much the same. The dogs sit in crates or kennels and rarely get sufficient interaction with the owner.

Yes, I think even 1 pet can be considered 'hoarded' if it is not well cared for. What makes me nervous is by whose standards are we judged? So frequently it is the least knowledgable that have the power to inflict laws that affect animal owners at large. And it seems to me, that people who have an ax to grind are often in the position to judge others in a meaningful way.

For example....speaking of Munchhausen(sp?) by proxy......when my kids were little & I was newly divorced, I saw a pediatrician who made my life miserable. We had to relocate after the divorce, so I tried to recount my kids medical history to her, & was constantly accused of  'creating' diagnosis' to get attention....just because my daughter had a condition that needed monitoring to be sure she didn't develope active disease. Because her disease was not active, the doctor said I invented the problem. She even said I had MBP...I refused to back down. I requested the insurance company assign a new provider, they would not. So, I became very cautious about taking my kids in to the doctor unless there was obviously something wrong.  So, when my daughter broke her finger by getting caught in the chain of a swing on the school playground, I waited until the next day, icing it & watching it to see how bad this really was, before I took her in. Of course, it was broken, & she got an aluminum brace taped on her finger. That was the whole treatment after x-rays confirmed the fracture. Big deal, huh? Well, NOW I was called an abuser. I want to tell you, my blood ran cold. I went to the administrator of the Peds Dept. at that point, & filed my own complaint, & spoke to a social worker, at MY request....& that seemed to end it. The next time I had to go in, her nurse apologized to me, & she never made another insinuation.

But, you know, if someone actually calls you an animal hoarder, what defense do you have? I suppose you would have to allow them to come into your home & inspect your domicile. Okay, no problem. Right? Your dogs are well trained & properly socialized, & they are accepting of strangers with possibly not-such-nice-ideas poking around their territory. Even if they DO have their radar up & know that you aren't 100% happy about this, & so by their nature, if you're not happy, they're not happy; they are still going to follow your commands & platz while your home is inspected. And, of course, they are fat & gentle (not lean like you & I know they should be! And OMG! Think what would happen if they BIT one of the inspectors! The poor dog!). And of course, your home is tidy, clean, & appealing, showing no overt ethnicity that might predjudice any observer...(I live in red-neck land)....GEEZ! Will you be given a chance to then inspect your inspector's home? After all, turnabout is fair play!

I've often wished, over the course of my life, that there was a syndrome of excessive normal-ness that I could accuse some of having.....'vanilla syndrome'? LOL

Hoarding is more about conditions and the mindset of the people involved.   Having worked with a couple of hoarding cases I honestly belive it has nothing to do with the number of animals.  Some people can have only one or 2 but are not capable of making common snese decisions about them or properly careing for them.  One case involved a so called rescue person who when finally busted had over 160 animals in her care.  The shaoe these animals were in was so bad that over half had to be euhtanized on site.  When I first walked into her home I was floored - the stench was overwhelming.  Bags of food were stacked up but no one had food or water.  The other case was different but still mind boggling.  It was a mother and daughter ( Mom was in her 80's) they had 14 cats mostly feral and 42 dogs - all inbred.  They had no heat, the house was covered in many inches of filth and these women slept in a bed which had only the room for them to lie down wrapped in their clothes.  I did not go in here as Animal Control would not allow anyone else inside - we just got the dogs as they were carried out.  These dogs had never had human contact other than these 2 ladies, no medical care, no grooming but they were fed.  The cats unfortunately were all euthanized but all the dogs were placed.

We have a large crew...but all are well taken care of!  So not hoarding...

May be pushing it tho!

This is my mom...and she is the ONLY one who lets them do this....So they flock to her room when she eats!

Carly is the WORST!!! LOL

by missyfly96 on 15 February 2011 - 16:02

That looks like my table at dinner time.  The landsharks are out.  There is a dog between every human at the table and one of them rest her snout on the table and gives a gently reminder that she is there with a nudge. As soon as one person finishes and she sees there is nothing left on their plate she moves over to someone else that still has food on their plate.
