LOL GSDtravels, I hear ya.

As for that article Vikram, my dog has killed many many coons.  I would have stopped it though if I was around at the time.

I'm sure I would not tape it.  I'd just shoot it quickly if it was a nuisance or live trap it and take elsewhere.
However, the way things are going, these animal fanatics are going to outlaw us killing any sort of animal.

And the vets will get richer and richer...

the more laws we have the less freedom we are allowed.
if animal abuse become a felony - eventually we will all be felons........

laws start harmless enough, but unfortunately its just a foot in the door .......
soon its modified into such a restrictive mess that any and everything becomes animal abuse.

look at what they're done with child abuse laws........a parent cannot even spank a child with an open hand on its bottom..........

sorry for what happened to your dog, but felony, that's just overkill.

I guess I am in the minority here.  Given my experience in prosecuting both misdemeanor and felony cases of animal cruelty, I believe that there are some forms of animal cruelty that warrant a felony designation.  In part this is to allow for a longer term of supervision to ensure compliance with terms of probation, and in many cases, mental health counseling.

That is not to say that every case should be a felony.  There is a big difference between the elderly man who chains his dog out without appropriate food, water, and shelter and the man who takes a pair of bolt cutters to a lab's head shattering its jaw and breaking several teeth because it barked at the ringing of the doorbell (In the case of the lab, the story had a happy ending in that he was surrendered as part of the case and is now a therapy dog and even had an article about him in Dog Fancy several years ago.).

However, it is a moot point for all but four states as the remaining 46 states have animal cruelty, in some form, as a felony:
