Sometimes I think people expect too much for too little. Then, when they get the $4000 dog they paid for, they are disappointed. You have to pay for what you want. If you want mediocre, you can get a deal. But to think they're going to send their best dogs over here for pennies is a bit naive and I think that's where a lot of people get burned.

I was totally thrilled w/the one female I imported titled. I purchased her before she was titled or surveyed (she was only 18mos), but then I left her in Ger. w/the sellers who had purchased her from her owner for me. I totally trusted them. I only even got one tiny, fuzzy picture of her. I knew she was a bicolor w/excellent structure and they said she was very serious and civil and I had to use some caution in handling her. I had no idea if she could even be bred, but I was willing to gamble because I had not been able to find what I thought was a good enough female to use for my breeding foundation. I wanted a certain temperament and excellent structure, and didn't specify anything else.

I was SHOCKED at how gorgeous she was when I got her off the plane. She was calm and polite, totally relaxed despite having to spend the first hours of her time in this country at an NTB store since I got a flat tire, lol. She was such a good sport. She didn't listen to me, but she wasn't too hard to handle. Finally, after about 3 weeks, all of a sudden she decided she liked me and started obeying my commands.

I lucked out and she had 9 pups in her first litter;-) Even if she hadn't, she would still have a home w/me. She would be an expensive pet, lol, but she's a phenomenal dog. I absolutely love her.

She worked exactly as described, surprising the skeptics who think all titled imports have purchased titles;-)

I say, if you have a reason to trust the sellers, go for it. Don't be stupid; if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. But don't be so cynical that you miss a great dog.

Here is my opinion as I have imported many titled dogs.  If you are considering purchasing an import that is supposed to be titled and you don't know the broker or can't get good refrences then spend the xtra thousand and go see the dog in person. Then if you like him or her you can take the dog back as excess baggage for a fraction of the cost of normal shipping. This wil end up only costing you a few hundred bucks and you can see it before you buy it!! .
Good Luck

Ace, yes. In between "ordering" her (took forever to find one suitable) and her being old enough to complete those things, I got pregnant and well, everything changed, to say the least! I had them get her show rating and her breed survey. I knew that would be much easier and practical for them to do prior to shipping her, as opportunities over here are not nearly as prevalent. I had her bred to a stud there right before shipping that I was interested in, and I'm so glad I did. I wouldn't risk her by sending her back for breeding ever again, and that sire has since passed away (Ron v. Ludwigseck). I'm really thankful I decided to do it this way. Of course, it was very expensive, and I had no guarantees, but I'm really really glad I went for it. I can't say enough about her. The one I'm talking about is the dog in my avatar; that pic was taken the morning after I got her. You can see a lot by her expression.

Good luck Triodegirl! I think we tend to hear more bad stories than good, but that doesn't mean there ARE more bad than good!
